You guys don't think Richard Pryor is funny? What the fuck is the matter with you? I'm not talking Brewster's Millions Richard Pryor, I'm talking stand up Richard Pryor. Same with Eddie Murphy, his standup was fucking great. Sure, he makes a whole lot of shitty movies, but go rent some of his standup from the 80s.
For my money, the best stand up comics were the three generations of Angry Black Comics. Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and now Chris Rock. Absolute greats, each one of them, in their day.
George Carlin NOW seems sort of derivitave, but that's mostly because George Carlin THEN was not. He's had an incredibly influential, and funny, career.
I didn't even know John Cleese did much stand up, to be honest. I haven't seen any. As a comedic actor, he's class, but not the best, barring Monty Python. Good character actor, with occassional moments of genius, and, again, Monty Python rates off the scale in terms of the history of funny, so anybody involved with that automatically gets a leg up in terms of legacy.
Bill Murray can basically carry any role he wants to in his sleep.
Jim Carrey stand up wasn't great, but was okay. Pretty much the same for his movie career, for that matter.
Bill Cosby was an okay standup. I sort of rate him with Sinbad, though. Which is to say, good at what he does, standup aimed for black middle class parents.
Steve Martin is one of the most talented individuals alive, to be honest (hyperbole, but he is a lot more talented and intelligent than people give him credit for). The Jerk HAS to rate as one of the Top Ten Comedies of All Time, and that in and of itself lands him a place in comedy history, not to mention his standup (which was great), or his work on SNL (which was great), his movies (most of which have been pretty great), and, he's a terrific and highly respected author/screenwriter (LA Story? Bowfinger?)/playwrite, not to mention art collector/critic, and a number of other things. He is as respected in upper crust circles for his Matisse collection and his collection of New Yorker essays as he is for people who appreciate King Tut, the arrow through the head, and The Jerk. He can do it all, a great guy. Sort of reminds of of Wallace Shawn, who most people remember just as being the bald "inconcievable" guy in The Princess Bride, but who has had a really top notch career in other circles (a very talented and prolific playwrite, for one). Obviously, don't get me started on Steve Martin.
Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock, as with Richard Pryor, in their heyday, were as electrifying standups as anything out there.
Mike Myers was a great SNL guy, and has done some okay movies.
I'll add one: Jerry Sienfeld.
