Music to Reflect On
There comes a time in our lives when we get bummed out. Happens to all of us. For me, when this happens, I love to dig through the mp3 collection and play some of my favorites. The more I sit and listen, the more I can piece memories of my life to the songs. Sort of my own life's soundtrack. It's a bit of a downward spiral. I start listening and the music begins to take hold. My thoughts deepen and I'm back there, feeling the old pains, rejections, and even the occaisonal happy moments. By the time I'm done I'm worn thin and feel terrible. It's like the songs have fed a poison in my mind and put a taint on my soul. But I notice that when I turn them off and come back to reality I begin to feel better. In fact, it's as if the music burns up the moodiness and leaves me fresh and renewed.
Some of the songs that mean alot to me are as follows.
Lynard Skynard:
Simple Man, Tuesday's Gone, Ballad of Curtis Lowe, Freebird, Sweet Home Alabama
Marshall Tucker Band: Can't You See
Little Feat: Dixie Chicken
Kansas: Carry On Wayward Son, Dust In the Wind
Doobie Brothers: Blackwater, China Grove
Journey: Wheel In the Sky
REO Speedwagon: Time For Me To Fly
Big Head Todd & The Monsters: Bittersweet
The Band: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Mountain: Mississippii Queen
The list goes on and on. AC/DC, Guns & Roses, Skid Row, Cheap Trick, Warrant, 38 Special, Foriegner, ZZ Top, CCR, Stones, ect. I could list them forever.
But when it comes to my all time favorite, that one song that is guaranteed to make me both simultaneously bummed out and moronically happy, it's Steelheart's Angel Eyes (I'll Never Let You Go.). It takes me to a time that was one of the happiest yet most depressing times of my life. To sit and listen to it takes me back through the years to a time when I was loved, and loved back without remorse. When I die, I want who ever I leave behind to set up the biggest sound system they can and blast it across the land at earthquake levels.
My sountrack may be filled with dino rock, but I love the stuff dearly. Listening to those old favorites is the best therapy for the soul I've found.
