I've finally gotten the chance to give the album a few spins.
From the opening chords and introductory destruction of "Hexagram" you get the feeling that this album may step even further away from the tighter knit songs of their first two releases, which "White Pony" began to unravel, yet this time with more of an edge. The album flows into "Needles and Pins," a song reminiscent of earlier times with a steady beat and single-note guitar work. "Minerva" truly enhances the mind with its atmospherical qualities, slowing the pace down even more into the world the album is seemingly creating. This ethereal sense fails to produce as the next two tracks, "Good Morning Beautiful" and "Deathblow," fail to continue any sort of atmosphere while also lacking the depth, melody, and impact that the rest of this album wields. Things get turned back up to 11 with "When Girls Telephone Boys," one of the best mixes of power and beauty on the entire album (if not THE best). The next few tracks move from loudness to quiet, including the slow mechanical "Lucky You" (which fits perfectly on this album but sucks as a stand-alone on the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack) and the 80s influenced "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event." The album ends fittingly with "Moana" and once again, I am impressed with this band.
I highly recommend it.
