hero
i don't know if anyone has talked about this movie yet, so i apologize if there's a thread floating about somewhere already.
with stars like crouching tiger hidden dragon's zhang ziyi and jet li, you know you're in for a treat.
the story: hero is set about two thousand years ago in the midst of china's greatest struggle as a nation. the country is divided into feudal states that are slowly being brought together through bloody war under one emperor. the film opens with a nameless warrior (jet li) being brought to the palace to be presented to the emperor for killing three infamous assassins. for each triumph, he is allowed to tell his tale, given accolades and gold, and moved closer to the emperor's presence. he tells his story through a series of flashbacks, and the emperor questions him on particulars of the events. as the tale continues, it becomes apparant that everything may not be as it seems, and the tales are re-told through different viewpoints.
this film is brilliant on so many levels. first of all, the cinematography is superb. every nuance, every color and texture are played for all they're worth. every time a particular memory is re-told in a different perspective, the backgrounds and clothing change to match the mood of the new narrator. it's a fantastic way to move the story without words and is very emotive. secondly, the direction and editing are fantastic. the scene seperation is crisp and seamless. the fight scenes are expertly choreographed and also tell the story without words. and the story itself is so simple- if you sat down and read the script it would probably only take about twenty minutes, and you would think you would be bored with the simplicity. but that's how balanced this film is. every aspect of the film tells the story. i was very pleasantly surprised by this film, and i would highly recommend it to anyone.
presently it's not available in the US, but a friend of mine got me a region free DVD copy online from an unknown source. happy hunting!
