1. There is a light that never goes out - The Smiths
What a great song this is, although I could have picked any number of Smiths songs
2. How beautiful you are - The Cure
From the last good Cure album, 'Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me'. Lovely song; his uniquely off-key singing works really well on this.
3. I Vow to Thee, My Country - Words, Cecil Spring Rice, Music, Gustav Holst
Excellent hymn, very stirring.
4. Levi Stubbs' tears - Billy Bragg
Heartbreaking stuff, and one of the few songs where his voice and accent are a real asset. 'Walk away Renee (version)', which is spoken, would be in a tie with this one; it is painfully like being 15 again listening to it, he gets it perfectly.
5. Elgar's Cello Concerto
The DuPres version is pretty sweet (although that is the cheesy thing to say, and to like; when it comes to classical music, I am a peasant; my next favourite would be Pachelbel's Canon, played (as it was written for) on the organ).
6. House of the Rising Sun - Bob Dylan
I prefer this version to the Animals' version (although Burden obviously has it, singing wise, over Bob). He sings it with the words as if he were a woman (although he doesn't attempt to do a woman's voice, thank God); I believe that this is what the song is actually supposed to be about, a prostitute who laments her fate.
7. Matty Groves - Fairport Convention
The live version, from House Full (after Sandy Denny, the female vocalist, left the band; she had a great voice, but the more powerful version that they did live is superb). Must have been amazing to have been there in 1970.
8. Standing Down in New York Town - Ralph McTell
Could have picked 10 songs by Ralph Mctell. This one is pretty cool, about the oddity of New York.
9. I want to conquer the world - Bad Religion
Have weasel spoor to thank for this, he kept playing the tape that he cadged from funkyrooster for the two months that I slept on his floor ('I'll only be here a couple of days, mate'). They were an amazing band up to and including 'Stranger than Fiction' (I first saw them on that tour, when Mr Brett was still in the band). Now that Mr Brett is back, I hear that they are pretty good again.
10. Jennifer Save Me - Golden Smog
I really like this song, for some reason. Golden Smog are pretty cool, for a bunch of guys who are just mucking around. Pretty much all their stuff that I have heard, I like.
Loads of other songs that I could have put in; 'Old Man' by Neil Young is definitely one that I like enough to be in the top ten if I had thought of it earlier, or 'The night they drove old Dixie down' by The Band. Or the great early 80s classic, 'Safety Dance' by Men Without Hats (especially for the video), or 'Wooden Ships' by Crosby , Stills and Nash. 'Catching the Butterfly' by The Verve is great, as is Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy the silence' (and a whole host of other Depeche Mode songs). I really could go on forever, especially if I looked at my CDs to give me some ideas. Last one that I will add is 'The fat boy goes to the cinema' by the Egg.
