Movies & Media Good Novelizations

It seems as though, when a novelization is written after a movie, it is almost universally either trivial or awful (or, too frequently, both). There are, however, rare exceptions.

Has anyone read novelizations of movies which are worthwhile? They don't actually have to be better than the movie, but at least worth reading in their own right.

I can think of two at the moment:
The Dark Crystal. I forget who novelized it--maybe A.H. Smith, or something like that--and I couldn't swear it came after the movie (though I think it did). In any case, it's a nice read, and expands on the movie plot in a few interesting ways.
The Abyss. The novel was written by Orson Scott Card, who spent a lot of time on the set, with the director and actors. This is one of the very few that I think is actually better than the movie--and I liked the movie a great deal. The novelization, though, is truly outstanding.

I'd love to hear about others you've read.
