28 Days Later (no spoilers)

I didn't realise that this film had not yet been released in the US. Well worth watching (although the ending is bit annoying), but conceptually frightening, and my old office is in it Very eery use of silence in some parts as well. Don;t trust some of the things said by the american reviews of the film either, I have read a few in the last few minutes and in their synopsis they all seem to make an elemntary mistake that makes me think they didn't really watch the whole film.

edit: this is of course a shameless plug for the British film industry

I'm actually thinking I should check this out...

Of course, now that it has a Phil-endorsment, I may not want to.

hahahahaha.... it does have one horrible continuity error that me and pj were discussing on Saturday night, but I shall wait till people have seen it before I talk about it.

It's not the 'greatest film' in the world, but I watched in twice in a week which must mean I liked it. Mind you it's set, in part, in London, which adds appeal I guess.

i've had this movie for a few weeks, and i completely agree with you, phil.

if you go by what the reviewers are saying, it's just another slasher film, but that's not what it's about. definitely one to see in the theaters when it comes to your town.

I got this on DVD, I thought it pretty good, funkyrooster seemed to think it was the biggest pile of crap in the world ever.

OK, if it isn't 'just' a slasher movie, what's it about in your opinions? Am intrigued.

Considering that it was all shot on piddly DV cams, the cinematography is outstanding.

if this is slasher movie then resident evil is slasher film. it doesnt follow the conventions of the slasher film. firstly the main character is male. 95% of slasher films have female leads known as the final girl, another convention of the slasher film is an internal location, normally your bog standard house, 28 days later is set over most of England.

there have been some excellent films shot using DV cams.

*spoilers*

well, i don't consider it just a slasher or even horror flick of any definition really, because the plot goes a little too deep for that. the soldiers turned out to be more monstrous than the infecteds for what they tried to do, because it was cunning and intentional, and when the main character goes beserk to protect his friends he is also worse than them, but for a different reason. basically, to me, it presented the human condition in all of its extremes and it did it well.

and he didn't just "get better". it was another 28 days later.

I did! more than one really as you know pj. I think though that for some of them you have to know London to spot them.

That film was great. I've watched it a couple of times since buying it and regret not seeing it in the cinema.

The father of the young girl is the unluckiest man ever.

I think you missed the point when he was in the hospital, and he got better before the 28th day, hence him not being all "Oi mate, where the fook am I?".
Plus the black chick was a chemist. Chemists can do everything. Every-thing.

*Continuity Errors*

Near the beginning when he has just met up with the other two survivors they are in a newsgaent shop in Canary Wharf's Jubille Line Station. This is on the North side of the River Thames on the Isle of Dogs.

They then go to Deptford to see if his parents are still alive. Deptford is on the south side of the river. They do not explain how they get across the river (there are no bridges in the Docklands and the nearest bridge would be Tower Bridge which is approximately a 6 mile walk, they would then have to walk anbother six miles to get to Deptford once over). This may have been a likely course of action as they appear to arrive in Deptford at dusk, which would 'roughyly' fit in with walking 12 miles from the Isle of Dogs.

However, when they decide to leave the house they are shown walking on railway lines (the Dockland Light Railway), again on the Isle of Dogs, just past Mudchute. This would seem to imply that they used either the raileway tunnel from Greenwich to Mudchute, or they used the foot tunnel from Greenwich to Island Gardens. Given the infected prefer to stay in the dark during daylight hours it seems highly unlikely that they would have walked through these tunnels, yet the place they were after crossing the river back from the South to the North side implies they mustr have used the tunnel. (of course they may have used a boat I guess).

However, they then see the lights in the tower block (as dusk is coming again) once on the North side of the river. When they meet up with the father and daughter they decide to travel North to Manchester.

Now they are already on the North side of the river, yet they go through the Blackwall Tunnel from the South side of the river, meaning that they either went back across the river after crossing twice already or, more likely, the tunnel was used because it was a good place to have a 'scary moment'.

When they drive to Manchester they stop halfway and sleep in a field. London to Manchester, via the M6, on a good day (ie low traffic) is about a 3 hour drive. When they arrive just outside Manchester at the barrier it is again getting dusky. This means they left London in the morning and took over 36 hours to do a 3 hour on completely empty motorways. A possible conclusion to this overnight stop was that it was done to make England look bigger than it actually is.

The above was the only faults I really had with the film, and the only reason I noticed them is because I live, work and drive in all the areas where the continuity was decidely odd.

I've ridden with you. You make England look MUCH smaller than it actually is. These people were likely driving just under the posted speeds, whereas it seemed to me that I noticed light bending visibly fore and aft of us whilst riding in from Gatwick. Still, I woke right up. And the conversation was great so long as I stared right at that spot on my shoe. My whole universe was in that spot for the three nanoseconds it took us to get to the train station from your house - not counting the roundabout.

I am saving Mug's driving description above.

Phil, is there reallly a pedestrian tunnel under the Thames at Greenwich?"
How long has it been there? Probably since Richard III---however I never knew it.

yes there are two foot tunnels under the Thames actually. One at Greenwich and one at Woolwich. I belive they date back to the early 19th Century.

I get all excited about scary/horror/thriller movies, but I was quite disappointed with this film. To be honest though, I thought the beginning was pretty good. I liked seeing London completely empty (my idea of bliss) and when the 'infected' started running about, it reminded me of rush hour on Oxford Street. Nice.

But I think they lost it half way through. It was so similar to Day of the Dead, it made me cringe. It was predictable and boring a lot of the time, although I squealed with delight when I saw thumbs in the eyes.
