Best Guitar Solo

What, to you, are the best guitar solos in terms of:

Emotion/Best sounding, and technical difficulty?

Jimi Hendrix - Somewhere over the rainbow takes the emotion catagory, for me.

As for technical difficulty, I think Michael Angelo - Time Traveler is brilliant, and so fucking fast. Yngwie Malmsteen also has some brilliant songs/solos which probably fit into technical difficulty, particularly I'm thinking of Apregios from Hell.

If you haven't heard these, I highly recommed you get them if you like guitar solos.

Your choices?

peace out and shit

Eric clapton playing solo with Elton John - saturday night alright for fighting.

Clapton smashes it. I think that was the reason I took up the guitar.

monster of cock....

Dave Navarro in Three Days is probably my favorite.

Trey Spruance in Last to Know is another.

Then a bunch with Chavez and Matt Sweeney.

Billy Corgan's more talented than folks give him credit.

And I can't stand technical lead. Never have. And I don't get why folks like Clapton so much.

But I don't know anything.

Speaking of which, there's some delicious lead by Mike McCready in the world, too.

I'll think of more and than post them in this same, dysfunctional manner.

Cheers!

Yup...

I'll have to vote for Ted Nugent's studio version of "Stranglehold".
It's like a 20 minute solo of Ted just tweaking the strings in every manner possible while stoned out of his gourd. Covers all aspects of Emotion/Best sounding, and technical difficulty.

Todd Park Mohr (Big Head Todd and the Monsters), "The Leaving Song."

In both categories.

If you've heard it, you'll know why.

For technical I'd have to vote for "Eruption" by Eddie Van Halen, simply for the fact that lots of people try to learn it, yet he screwed up in the take they used.

For emotional I'd have to pick the entire song "Lenny" by Stevie Ray Vaughan. I have not been able to think of anything else that truly satisfies that category, even though it is an entire song. I prefer the live version from "Carnegie Hall" as well.

Definitely got to go with Gilmour's solo on Comfortably Numb. His solo on Time is another one I'd rank among the best.

the version of Europa off the Moonflower LP was always one of my favorites. I don't think people value Clapton for his craft so much as his art. There's nothing wrong with technical ability, but technically great guitar players are not a rare breed. There are many others as good as Clapton, but he certainly has a unique style that works well for him. He's not my favorite, but I acknowledge his talent.

I think this thread presupposes that we're talking about a certain aspect of musicianship or artistry that holds no appeal for some folks, or relevance, I guess. I know that as a teen in the 70's a blues-based, formula rock hit with a searing guitar lead whilst the speakers sat inches from either ear and the tetrahydracannanibidol oils approaching saturation in my system was the point at which I got gooseflesh and approached union with God. Nowadays it seems kinda silly and limiting, but I still acknowledge the talent involved. It just doesn't play a big part in what I listen for in music, and it hasn't for twenty years or more.

Robin Trower - Daydream

Well, in 'Emotion' Most likely, any Stevie Ray Vaughan solo longer than 30 seconds,
'Best Sounding' Going consistant with the flow of the song and all around mixing well Slash during 'Coma' one of the better GnR 10min'ers. And seriously underated song.
'Difficulty' ultimatly goes to Hendrix for Little Wing or either Angel.
