the version of Europa off the Moonflower LP was always one of my favorites. I don't think people value Clapton for his craft so much as his art. There's nothing wrong with technical ability, but technically great guitar players are not a rare breed. There are many others as good as Clapton, but he certainly has a unique style that works well for him. He's not my favorite, but I acknowledge his talent.
I think this thread presupposes that we're talking about a certain aspect of musicianship or artistry that holds no appeal for some folks, or relevance, I guess. I know that as a teen in the 70's a blues-based, formula rock hit with a searing guitar lead whilst the speakers sat inches from either ear and the tetrahydracannanibidol oils approaching saturation in my system was the point at which I got gooseflesh and approached union with God. Nowadays it seems kinda silly and limiting, but I still acknowledge the talent involved. It just doesn't play a big part in what I listen for in music, and it hasn't for twenty years or more.
