I've had two of those bites, but they were not near as severe as getting fucking stitches.
The first happened in north idaho when i was 11 or 12. I got bit on my leg, above the ankle. At it's biggest, it was necrotic in a spot about as big around as a quarter. Not all that deep, but deeper than my third-degree burn was. I don't remember getting ill over it, but i know it took forever to heal, and left a decent scar.
Last one was last year, over in Vernal, UT. Probably happened in the fleabag motel we were staying at. Right on the inside of my forearm. It got hard and red, and I went to town on it with the pliers, regularly. All kinds of nasty shit came out of it, more than I remember from the leg bite. It didn't get very big around, but it was deep enough that i put bacitracin and a band-aid on it to keep working. Usually for something that deep, I would go in for stitches, but it was so small in diameter that i didn't think it would be worth it. My whole arm got red and it felt really sore, but I didn't feel ill at all. I got the bite in July and still had a scab at the end of september. It left a decent scar, a little smaller than a dime.

I suppose it's always possible that it was some other kind of necrotic venom, but brown recluse are around, so i would suspect them.
>>edit: the bug bite's the scar on the far left.
