Hey, I entered chat a few weeks ago at the request from Sabine to "Get my ass in chat", or something similar. When, upon doing so, I sat there watching the same boring conversations unfolding, by the same small handful of people, or I saw the same people sit idle - if they were even "there". The dynamics of chat are hardly...dynamic. That's really the beauty of chat, it's timeless. If you've visited at all in the past year, you're good to go. You've seen all there is to see.

Unfortunately this little bit has been pretty true as of late. It's getting stagnant.

Doesn't it seem as if people are just addicted to change for its own sake these days?

I mean, look at fashion...websites...everything just simply must be fresh and cutting-edge or it's automatically obsolete.

The sad thing that I've discovered is that there is nothing as fresh as stories and ideas written down ten, fifty, one hundred, one thousand or more years ago...and nothing as tired and as trite as the daily newspaper.

Why do things have to change? I mean, improvement is all well and good, but change has become an end in and of itself. Everything's all about progress. And are we any happier?

Chat does not "grow".
The conversations do not "grow".

You're failing to recognize the "boring" factor.

sorry.. I was actually saying that in reply to squee's "Why do things have to change?".. not about chat.. chat isn't really growing.. more like slowing.

Stagnant:

1. Not moving or flowing; motionless.
2. Foul or stale from standing: stagnant ponds.
3.
1. Showing little or no sign of activity or advancement; not developing or progressing; inactive: a stagnant economy.
2. Lacking vitality or briskness; sluggish or dull: a stagnant mind.

I stand by my statement that chat, and to a degree this forum, is stagnant. It's hardly an emotional assessment of anything. You look at a body of tepid water that isn't moving. You say it's stagnant. Asylum chat, no matter what time of day I pop in, is usually like that body of stagnant water. Unmoving. Periods of hours where not a single thing is said. The same faces day in and out.

Stagnation.

Why must things be fresh? Because the same ol thing is boring. You speak of technology and say "everything has to be new." In that sense: new usually means improvement. Or would you rather be stuck on some 900 baud connection from the days of yore? Do you enjoy the hyperlink? Flash animation? FTP? Encrypted transfers?

That's why everything on the web has to be "cutting/bleeding edge." It makes it interesting. It makes it better.

Fashion itself is a fickle beast with a mutation rate of once every ten seconds. Fashion itself changes because of imagination. Someone has a new idea so they play with it.

Progress is good. Change is good.

Or do you feel more comfortable with the old 1950's saying: change is a dangerous thing?

Of course change is always dangerous. No change is done without some kind of risk.

And yes, I enjoy all those things...well, I enjoy a couple of things (I could do without Flash) that faster internet speeds bring me.

But when it comes down to it, what good does it do me? If it's good, obviously it's good for me; but it's not apparent that simply because things are "new" that they are necessarily "interesting" or "good."

There's lots of things that this guy, progress, has given us, but I wouldn't say they made us any happier or did us any good. Take cars, for example. I don't know anybody who enjoys driving cars except under certain conditions. And yet so many people endure the morning commute...for what? Yeah, it's necessary, but is it doing us any good? Personally I'd prefer to walk. And then there's stuff that isn't even necessary, like developing missiles to deliver VX gas. What the fuck is that for? That certainly doesn't do anything but make people nervous. Progress.

And look...like I said..."unchanging" is objective, while "stagnant"--the assessment of that state as "bad"--is the emotional response, you sort of confirmed that with your reply. Sure, a lot of progress has been good, but it's because it's just GOOD, not simply because it's DIFFERENT, right?
