South Africa and Mauritius

Only landed this morning so I am still having to go through alot of these pictures. I have not even developed half of them yet.

Safari is cool.... more to come. Have wild dog pictures somewhere.

The mountain ranges of South Africa are breathtaking to say the least.... and they make your ears pop.

ahhhh Mauritius!

more to follow sooner or later.

I've got this image of Phil in one of those hunting shirts with the suede patch on the shoulder and a pith helmet.

"Lions to the left of me! Lions to the right! I raised my rifle...and FIRED!"

And that's when the Stooges start throwing pies and the dinner party disintegrates into mayhem.

Glad to have you back, Livingston.

We were staying about 10 minutes from Kruger. The animals pics were taken inside the park. I have a load of video as well but I need to convert it into mpeg at some point.

Didn't get that sunburnt mug, it's winter in the southern hemisphere, it was very windy but beautiful (with the odd shower to cool you down as well)

Have to run now, am picking up the other picks which will need to be organised and scanned. Laters.

this elephant was rather hungry. He was also a show off for our game ride!

peekaboo!

totally sedatry bloody hippo. He did move after a few minutes but that was to lay down in the mud.

a lone hyena in the bush

Imapla..... also known as lion dinner.... also also known as Phil's dinner the following night. Very stringy though.

a bit more of a closer look at lion dinner.

these two little buggers stole one of my travelling colleagues banana. They were very cute though and were especially funny when they started to mount each other.

a white rhino, all on his lonesome.

this lot, particularly the one on the far right were not best pleased that we were staring at them.

I have lions too, but they are on video so I have to wait for the stills.

we also visited a place called The Cheetah Project where they breed cheetahs and preapre them for life in the Kruger, in addition to the wild dog breeding programmes as well. I have never in my life been this close to a dog of such immense power. Yes, it's a dog. I know it looks like a cat but it is technically a dog because it is unable to retract it's claws... hence it is not a cat. They still purr very loud though.

And you believed that, and now you are expecting us to believe that?

What a load of codswallop.

How big were the mosquitoes?

well the claw thing is true. It also has other features that link it closely with the dog family. It is a bit of a genetic cock-up in some sense. I believe generally speaking now the defintion of a cat to a dog come in whether or not it purrs. As the cheetahs purrs it can be classfied as a cat, but as it's claws do not retract like that of a cat it can also be classified as a type of dog. Either way they are gorgeous.

The mossies were non-existance... it was winter.

Glad too see you kept your distance from the Cape buffalo. They are evil-tempered, agressive bastards.

My girlfriend and I spent about 3 hours in a tree on the wild coast in Natal one fine spring day, with one of those son-of-bitches charging the tree every time we moved.

I should add that I am going back next year. If any of you (other than Simon who has done the whole safari thing) ever have the opportunity to go on holiday to South Africa then do it. I have visited shitloads of countries around the world, each has been welcoming and always a cultural enrichment to me, but none have been as good as SA. The people are the nicest most welcoming lot in the world, even in the more run down areas as we discovered. A truly wonderful nation to be sure and one that I am gonna be seeing a lot of in the next decade I think.
