US soldier kills rare Bengal tiger in Iraq zoo
US soldier kills rare tiger
20/09/2003 18:26 - (SA)
Bagdad - An American soldier shot and killed a rare Bengal tiger in Baghdad zoo during an apparently drunken party, the head of the zoo said on Saturday.
"The soldiers arrived in the evening with food and beer, accompanied by a group of Iraqi police officers," Adel Salman Musa said of the incident on Thursday night.
"One of the soldiers, who the Iraqi police said had drunk a lot, went into the cage against the advice of his colleagues and tried to feed the animal, who severely hurt his arm," he explained to AFP.
The tiger tore off one of the soldier's fingers and mauled his arm. One of the other soldiers immediately fired at the animal and killed it, he said.
"The soldiers don't have the right to behave like that. That was the most precious and valuable animal in the whole zoo. It was 14 years old and had been born here," Salman Musa said.
The Bengal tiger is an endangered species which is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
There are only 3 000-4 500 of these creatures left in the wild.
Salman Musa said US soldiers often held parties in the zoo in the evenings. "We have no way of stopping them," he said.
US Sergeant Mark Ingham confirmed to AFP that an American soldier had killed the tiger on Thursday and said the incident was being investigated.
Baghdad zoo reopened to the public in July.
It houses 44 animals other than the prized tiger, most of which came from the palaces of deposed leader Saddam Hussein and his late son Uday, who was a lover of big cats.

Well, damn!
I hope they at least proceeded to bbq the tiger and eat it. Shouldn't be a total waste.

I don't see what the big deal is. Regardless of whether or not the dumbass went into it's cage, the tiger had to be killed. It attacked a human. It's a pretty standard practice to do when large predators attack people. Now, with that said, the idiot who entered the cage deserved his finger tore off. What the fuck did he think the tiger was, grandma's tabby? Christ.
The score is even on both sides.

Yeah, I guess. But it sure looks good to the Islamic world that we let our soldiers wander around Baghdad holding drunken parties. They'll be sure to welcome us wholeheartedly in the next middle eastern country we invade.

Yes, because when we invade another country I am sure the native people will scream "GET OUT!!! AFTER YOU SAVE OUR LIVES FROM A TYRANT LEADER THAT BRUTALLY KILLS OUR FAMILIES YOU WILL HOLD DRUNKEN PARTIES AT OUR ZOOS AND KILL OUR GIANT CATS!!!!"
That makes total fucking sense. Yes billigerat, I am sure this is the EXACT incident future countries will refer to during a time of aid/invasion......

Iraqi Zoo Animal Toll Continues to Climb, By Scott Ott
Congressional critics of the Bush administration today attacked the president for "the tragic quagmire" at the Baghdad zoo.
The death toll for Iraqi zoo animals continued to climb yesterday, as a U.S. soldier allegedly killed a Bengal Tiger that was injuring another soldier.
In April, American soldiers shot and killed four lions which had escaped from the same zoo. Hundreds of other animals have been killed or released by looters.
"This zoo war was made up in Texas," said Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-MA. "The carnivorous cats posed no imminent threat. The whole thing is a fraud."
Mr. Kennedy's Democrat colleagues slammed Mr. Bush for lacking "a zoo exit strategy and timeline."
Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin (who is a man) called for the zoo to be immediately turned over to a provisional authority consisting of "the more sentient mammals; chimps, orangutans, and whales."

since we haven't really gotten the full story on this, and just basing my opinions on what was reported, i wouldn't say that the tiger attacked the soldier. if you consider the amount of stress the animal might be under, having some drunken fuck up of a soldier sticking your hand in the animal's space might be construed by the animal as an attack, and it was merely defending itself.
so if you really want to even the score, shoot and kill the soldier that stuck his hand in there and provoked the tiger.

Inky, the tiger bit his finger off. If that is not an attack, than what is? A defensive attack is no different than an offensive one. Either way, Private Dumbass is missing a digit because he got bit by a tiger. Thus, the tiger got his head blown off. Shit rolls downhill and the tiger is at the bottom of that hill as far as a drunk pissed off troop with a wounded buddy is concerned.
Do you seriously believe that the life of a tiger is equal to a human? The guy may be a complete tard but he is still higher on the totem pole than some damned cat.

Hehe! Good comedy bit, especially the bit about Teddy.
Seriously, I have no problem with us killing escaped lions. Certainly I would rather see them recaptured, but if killing them saves lives, so be it. But as I pointed out above, letting our soldiers go around town holding drunken parties is a mistake. Alcohol is prohibited in Islamic nations (despite the boozy hypocrisy that is practiced in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere), and we will only be seen as openly flouting muslim morality in the faces of the people. If we are going to let our people drink, let them do it on base and away from the populace. Those soldiers holding parties at the zoo, or anywhere else about town, should be disciplined. We need to be building up as much good will as we can, especially with the recent fuck-ups of shooting at Iraqi police by mistake and etc.

the drunken ass shouldn't have stuck his hand into the tiger's cage, end of story. that's the tiger's space, it's there for a purpose, to separate the animal from people. if the tiger had swiped through the bars at the guy then it would be different.
and to answer your question, i don't think the life of the tiger is equal to a human. generally speaking, i think animals are far better than man.
after all, the tiger didn't pollute his brain with alcohol and provoke the human.

This question is dodgy. It should be "Do you seriously believe that the lif2e of a tiger is equal to a human finger? In which case the answer is most certainly "yes". Mind you I would say that the answer is "yes" anyway and I ain't no member of PETA before anyone suggests it.
There are about 4000 Bengal tigers in the entire world compared to approximately 7 billion people. The former live in reletively small areas, spend their lives eating and sleeping, and will probably disappear from existance in the next 100 years due to the actions of the latter. The latter destroys the land, has wars, regularly kills others of their own kind, is generally pretty fucking nasty and looks uinlikely to become extinct anytime soon.
Yep, all in all, I'd say a Bengal tiger's life is worth more than a human life, it's particularly worth more than some fucking soldier that is paid to take a bullet anyway (not that he died of course)
edit: Oh... and I think that tigers are actually above humans in the natural food chain. The very fact that we have to use weapons to kill tigers shows that.

Well you wrote above in the original article that the soilder was trying to feed it, undoubtibly holding it with his hand....what did he think was going to happen? To the tiger, that is like food holding food. I think he deserves whatever happened to him.

To those of you that think the life of a tiger is equal too or greater than a human answer me this. If you had to choose which would have to die, you or a tiger, which would you choose? I think the answer is obvious. The cat would end up a pile of bbq and a nice rug.
The idiot should not have been in the cage or fucking with the tiger to begin with but to hell with a damned cat. Cats are not innocent little critters. I've regularly seen cats toy with and torture their prey for hours on end. They can be vicious and vindictive as hell and lots of animals kill for sport with no intention of eating the prey. The idea that mother nature is innocent and does not know hate, wars, and such is pure fantasy. The idiot did get what he deserved when the tiger tore his finger off but so did the cat for attacking a human. Food chain be damned, if I see a friend attacked or if I'm attacked, the attacker is going to die. Humans rule the world and we decided long ago that the food chain has us sitting on the top. The fact that we have to use weapons to be there doesn't matter. We rule and the animals can go suck a dick.
I'd like to know how the hell he got in the cage to begin with. Did the cops they showed up with have the keys? Somehow I doubt the door was unlocked. I think that part of the tale should be told.
