Pittsburgh used to be a dark, dirty city, back when the major industry in the area was the mines. You could literally spend a couple hours outdoors in some places and feel the residue on your skin. In the 80's, with the decline of manufacturing/steel, they did a major turnaround, and became a leader in the service industries. The whole area has cleaned up, downtown revamped, two new stadiums in the past couple years, and it's now a great place to be.
Can't tell you much about nightlife, but I hear great things about it. Downtown is very people friendly, including walking bridges over the rivers (the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio). Lots of sites, including Point State Park and Fort Pitt at the confluence of the rivers, the ball parks, and along the Mon. River, the various inclines that take you to the top of Mt. Washington. Definitely a must see: the view from Mt. Washington, overlooking the city and suburbs, was voted the second most scenic place in the US.
Pittsburgh has a very good zoo NE of town (in Oakland), a great golf course (Oakmont), river boat cruises, skiing, hiking, and plenty of name entertainers coming to town. Fallingwater is 2 hours away. Can't tell you much about transit: there is a limited subway, but I don't know how much, if at all, commuter trains are used. Airport is well out of town on the west. In general, I'd say it's not an easy town to drive around/through, though the traffic problems aren't quite as bad as other cities its size. It's just not a well-planned city, being in the East.
I never lived in the city, only suburbs. You'll definitely notice an accent, but it's not heavy. It's "pop" there, not soda, they use gumbands, not rubber bands, and the side of the road is the "berm". You never speak ill of Roberto Clemente, and never, ever wear a Cowboys hat.
Don't know anyone there anymore. Guessing the closest Asylumite is morgana. Would definitely move back to that area, though the cost of living is a good bit higher than what you and I live with now.
