do not call telemarketing free speech

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS...call/index.html

National do not call list violates free speech? My ass it does. Calling me at home without my permission is NOT free speech.

I have to write you a letter to ask permission to ring you?

No wait, how do I get permission to send you a letter?

You stand in the street, wave for him, when he comes out to the street, ask if you can walk up to his door to knock.

i said nothing of the sort. nobody is claiming telemarketers can't call anyone, just people who specifically ask them not to (by joining the list).

Since when was advertising of any kind considered free speech anyway? it's marketing, not the expression of ideas or views which was the purpose of first amendment. I don't think allowing salespeople into my home to sell me stuff was on the minds of our forefathers when they decided free speach was important.

The Do Not Call registry is a breath of fresh air in the US. In the UK we have no real problems with telemarketers. When I came to the US I was shocked at the level of "crap calls" I got. It particularly pissed me off because I usually only got calls from my family which I looked forward to so to have some schmuck asking me about insurance was a real annoyance. I quickly learned the necessary phrase "please put me on your "do not call" list" but many callers would say they were not qualified enough to do that or some such bollocks. So I submitted two forms to the direct marketing association, requesting that they do not send me or call me with crap. It has been remarkably effective. I don't get any calls now apart from one persistent stragler and this is before the National Registry comes into place.

I recommend US residents do this.
