career decisions

Well, I just got my hardcopy orders in the mail.

In the small print it says that I have agreed to serve for another three years in return for going to this billet. I have not done so, but they could argue that by showing up on the day the orders say I have to, I have tacitly agreed to it.

So, I'm contesting the orders. Now I don't know where I'm going to go. They're probably going to send me out on the Thorn, which deploys for eight months six days after I leave the ship I'm in now.

All of this bullshit comes down to the Navy not having any money, or not knowing how much money it has, which happens every year in October, the beginning of our new Fiscal Year. This is why they have billets eveywhere but never any money to send people places.

So, anyway, I got on the phone with the detailer and told him I MIGHT consider doing three years if he sent me to the technical school required for the billet (as opposed to just getting on-the-job-training. If I graduate from the school I get a Naval Enlistment Classification code, sort of a specialty certification which is recognized in the outside world).

HIM: "Well, y'know, lots of people reenlist and don't get any schooling or money for it."
ME: "Yeah, they're called Bosun's Mates, now get me the school or we're through talking."

So today I'm weighing all the pros and cons--leaning heavily towards getting the fuck out in June when my contract is up and finishing my bachelor's--when they muster the entire duty section to clean out the Chief's (senior enlisted guys') berthing.

2/3 of the way done with a molecular bio degree...
1500 on my fucking SATs...
Here I am, broom in hand, cleaning up after grown fucking men.

There are days (mostly ones ending in "Y") when I just want to say...fuck this job :\

Oh yeah, and I'm supposed to talk to the DOHS recruiter sometime in the next couple of weeks. This bothers me...a lot. It's like a just have my choice between boring shitty jobs and morally reprehensible ones.

I guess I should just shut up and count myself lucky not to be starving out on the street.

At least you aren't facing a choice between Rangely Colorado and St Louis.

Squee, you've served your country. You've done more than what we ask of anyone your age. Get out, enjoy the discounted schooling with your GI bill and go do something you like.

Also, did you get your shellback while you were in?

Well, considering I'm here with a fresh biology degree and I couldn't get a job to save my life (well, at least one that pays more than $6 an hour), I'd say you're doing better than me.

At least I'm not doing shit work like that. Err... though I was doing some a couple weeks ago.

Billet is Turkish for "ticket." But what does it mean in English?

'Billet' is 'ticket' in French, too, isn't it?

Probably got it from the French.

The thought of spending THREE MORE YEARS in Norfolk disturbs me profoundly...I wonder if it's the "staying in one place" bit that I don't like.

Fiscal year starts tomorrow. Detailer ought to have enough money to at least send me to Fort Meade or something.

So I guess you must rather like the Navy, despite a little complaining, if you're considering being stuck for three more years, even if not in the same place.

Or else I'd say go for a DHS job (there must be some semi-non-evil jobs there, at least one or two, and they probably pay well) while you figure out if you want to go to school and, if so, where.
