Sports What Sports Do You HATE?

America's Most-Hated Sports Include Pro Boxing, Wrestling
Sunday, September 28, 2003

Popularity polls come and go. As the baseball playoffs begin, the National Football League (search) is boasting that one poll shows it is more than twice as popular as the national pastime.

For a deeper insight into the American psyche, consider the sports that are loathed the most.

No. 1 on the list, by far, is dogfighting, hated or disliked a lot by 81 percent of the public, according to a poll conducted by the Sports Marketing Group in Atlanta.

No. 2 is pro wrestling (search), legal but farcical and more than a little trashy. That's also its appeal to those who love it, though more than half the nation can't stand the sight of over-muscled showmen slamming each other around the ring -- fake or not.

No. 3 is bullfighting, a sport that Americans who haven't been to Spain or Mexico or read Hemingway don't get, never see and, apparently, don't want.

Then there's pro boxing at No. 4, loathed by 31.3 percent of the public. Need we say more than Mike Tyson (search) and Don King?

No real surprises there, considering the violence of those sports and the aversion toward them, especially by women. But this is where the list gets interesting, with class, race and age figuring into the findings.

The genteel PGA Tour is the No. 5 most hated and disliked sport (30.4 percent), followed by the PGA seniors' Champions Tour (29.9), the LPGA Tour (29.2), NASCAR (27.9), Major League Soccer (27.6) and the ATP men's tennis tour (26.5). That's a lot of people who hate or dislike events that sponsors are backing with billions of bucks.

All those sports, to be sure, have their share of passionate fans who love them or like them a lot but the level of antipathy toward them is astonishing.

Golf, even in the age of Tiger Woods, still turns off many Americans with its snooty and sexist country club image. The image may not fit reality -- there are plenty of public courses played by middle-class golfers -- but perception is everything in polls.

Three times as many black fans -- 13.4 percent -- say they love or like the PGA Tour now compared to 1993, doubtlessly because of Woods. But that hasn't put much of a dent in the number of people who still can't stand the sport. Ten years ago the hate/dislike figures on the PGA Tour were roughly the same -- 31.9 percent.

NASCAR turns off almost as many with the opposite image: red, white and blue -- or as some see it, redneck, blue collar and white skin -- even if it is has broadened its appeal to millions who don't fit that description.

Soccer still seems like a foreign film with subtitles to many Americans, and men's tennis has lacked a few small essentials: stars, diversity and compelling rivalries.

They are all held in lower regard by more people than the NHL, the Arena Football League, the Indy Racing League, women's college basketball and the WNBA.

But the big story in this list of sports Americans hate most -- based on a telephone poll of 1,000 respondents that is a prelude to a larger study later this year -- is what comes next: the NBA, with 19.7 percent of the country hating or disliking it, and Major League Baseball, with 17.5 percent strongly against it.

For most of the sports, with the exception of NASCAR, which has grown both in popularity and unpopularity with increased exposure on television, there was little change from the Sports Marketing Group's study that asked the same questions 10 years ago.

For the NBA, though, the hate/dislike responses increased sharply from 11.9 percent a decade ago, while baseball's negative numbers nearly doubled from 9.9 percent.

Baseball isn't quite as bad off as the NFL is claiming from a Harris Poll that says pro football is more than twice as popular as baseball. In the Sports Marketing Group poll, the NFL was loved or liked a lot by 42.8 percent of Americans, while baseball's popularity number was 31.8 percent.

"In the NBA, there are underlying racial issues and resentment about how the players act, how many get arrested and how much they're paid," said Sports Marketing Group managing director Nye Lavalle. "In baseball, the labor disputes, the huge salaries, the perception of players on steroids and their perceived arrogance are factors."

Ten years ago, only 12.5 percent of white Americans had strong feelings against the NBA. In the poll this year, that soared to 21.1 percent of whites who hated or disliked the NBA. The number of black respondents who felt that way stayed virtually unchanged at under 3 percent.

"There's been a seismic shift in the fan base of the NBA," Lavalle said. "If the league keeps going in the same direction, it's going to be in deep trouble. Baseball is on the decline and it could be dying if it doesn't change the way it's structured."

In other words, both sports may be going to the dogs.

Damned judgemental Merkins. How can we hate what we've never actually seen? Mom used to get mad if I said "I hate liver" without even trying it.

Canine carnage. Try it before you bash it!

I detest dogfighting.

Unfortunately my dog is a big fan of it, she participates in "friendly matches" whenever she gets the chance.

Can't connect with basketball in any sense. Cockfighting bores me now, but dog fights never appealed to me at all.

Motor sports are sports. They are just different than football and basketball.

I wonder if the poll made a distinction between hating of Watching the sport or participating in the sport? I hate watching basketball, golf and baseball on tv with a passion but I enjoy playing all of them... humm

I dont 'hate' any legitimate sports. Bullfighting is obnoxious and not a sport to me. Same would apply to any animal on animal contest where the ultimate goal is to injure your oppenent to the point of their not being able to continue, except boxing. Boxing is two individuals choosing to do it. Out of the traditional big 4 in America, Basketball is the only one I dislike. So I dont watch it or fund it. Simple.

I admit that I used to be a big NBA fan, but in the past couple years I've lost interest almost completely. I barely paid attention during the last playoffs. The players remind me of whiny children.

Most sports just bore me.

The ones that don't are not stuff I'd generally think of sports except they're shown on ESPN, so of course they must be sports. Like pool and poker.

Interesting article. I can't believe golf is that high. I wonder if indifferent was an option.

From ESPN:

Tuesday, September 30, 2003

Associated Press
PINSON, Ala. -- A Pinson man was charged with attempted murder for holding a gun to his son's head and pulling the trigger in the midst of a tantrum after Alabama's double overtime loss to Arkansas Saturday.

The bullet narrowly missed 20-year-old Seth Logan, who said he picked the wrong time to ask his dad for a car, sheriff's spokesman Deputy Randy Christian said Monday.

Joseph Alan Logan, 46, surrendered to police Saturday and was charged with attempted murder and domestic violence. He was released from the Jefferson County jail Sunday on $7,500 bond.

"I know we take football serious in the South," Christian told The Birmingham News for a Tuesday story, "but that's crossing the line."

The request upset Joseph Logan because his son has already wrecked several vehicles, Logan told investigators.

"He claimed he was just trying to scare his son," Christian said.

According to the police report, Joseph Logan had been drinking alcohol and began slamming doors, tossing boxes and throwing dishes in the sink after the Crimson Tide lost its football game to Arkansas, 34-31 in double overtime Saturday.

While Joseph Logan was throwing the tantrum, Seth Logan asked for a new car.

Joseph Logan then retrieved a 9 mm pistol from his car, grabbed his son by the collar and pressed the gun to his son's forehead, the report said.

Logan threatened to shoot his son in the head, then pulled the trigger.

Seth Logan moved his head just as his father fired and the bullet whizzed past him, the report said.

Seth Logan fled to a neighbor's house to call police. He told police his ear was numb and his head ringing, but he was OK.

Sheriff's authorities called the SWAT team after discovering the armed father still had a 13-year-old son in the house with him.

Joseph Alan Logan walked out of the house with the other son and turned himself in to police just before the SWAT team arrived, Christian said.

I'm still trying to guess as to how many people really hate boxing because its corrupt or hate it because its mean and violent.

Boxing if by far my favorite sport to watch. Like DI, I don't really "hate" any sports, but I'm pretty indifferent to most, the NBA being one, and golf being another, that I'll likely never watch an entire regular season game of in my life. Baseball I enjoy for the history as much as anything, but tend to find it rather dull. Football's okay, as is soccer, and both are much much better when watched in the presence of real fans, preferably a crowd of drunk ones.

I note that cricket didn't make it onto the hate list.

NASCAR ranks up there with wrestling in my mind's eye. I know it ISN'T neccessarily the redneck sport of choice, but it sure seems like it, and that in itself doesn't bother me so much as just how dull it is. Who would think racing cars could be so fucking boring?

Going to The Olympics in 96 really changed my perspective on sports in a lot of ways. I had never really noted the difference before in seeing a sport live and seeing it on TV. The difference is as clear as watching a rock concert on TV vs being there. I mean, I got way into volleyball when it was an Olympic Event. And Nigeria vs. Brazil in a packed football statium? Foggedaboutit. Sad to report, though, that Ping Pong, even the medal matches, is just as boring live as you think it would be, though Ping Pong injuries are wicked fun to watch.

Oh yeah, the original point of the article, is that this bodes well for soccer in America. It's nearly as high (low) on the hate list as professional basketball, and is actually LESS hated than golf or boxing. A huge step from ten years ago, when, like cricket, I don't think it was even listed.

When more Americans know about cricket, more will learn to hate it. A game that takes up to five days and can still end in a draw probably isn't going to catch the public's imagination.
