Amaze your friends with words that no one uses

http://phrontistery.50megs.com/ihlstart.html

Probably been done lots of times before, but is cool (I think) nevertheless. Trusty favourites like 'defenestration' (which most people know) are there, but who knew that 'noyade' was 'execution by drowning'? Well, some of you would have done, but I didn't.

"Defenetration" meaning "taking away windows"?

I am so using "napiform" the next time I make a fat joke. That's gonna be so cool.

Definitely a cool link.

Fantastic words in there.

I read a book a few weeks back written by a fellow who also apparently read the dictionary as well, I had to actually grab my dictionary a number of times to look up words and saw a great many that I hadn't seen used outside of the dictionary.

My friend who loaned me the book did a search on the author to find the sequel(which was never written as the author died before completing it) and found the book on amazon. The reviews given to it seemed to llargely focus on how the book was terrible for being verbose. One of the last reviews pointed out that the problem likely wasn't with the book, but the readers education.

Highly entertaining.

I have heard "defenestration" also used as a synomym of defloration meaning the destruction of the hymen. Probably West Texas ignorance however since none of my dictionaries record that meaning.

Alexander Theroux is sort of like that. When I read "Darconville's Cat" (which is a weird novel) I had to keep a dictionary handy.

Frottage can be fun.

Just be careful upon whom you practice it.

I've heard that, too, oxsan. I think I ran into a site that was dedicated to hymen popping that was called something like defenestration.com, but I'm not going to try to verify that from the office.
