I know this is a minor thing, but how in the hell do you mispronounce Nevada?

Bush mispronounces Nevada in first presidential visit

Wednesday, November 26, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(11-26) 10:02 PST CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) --

Nevada memo to George Bush: When making a first presidential visit to a state, use the right pronounciation of its name.

Bush, in Las Vegas on Tuesday, repeatedly said Ne-vah-da. To properly pronounce Nevada, the middle syllable should rhyme with gamble.

Mispronouncing the state's name "sets people's teeth on edge," said state Archivist Guy Rocha. "He's the president, and he ought to get it right. Nothing personal."

State Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, said the mispronunciation shows Bush, who won the state in the 2000 election, doesn't care much about the state.

"They take such pains to orchestrate these trips and to make sure everything is politically correct," she said. "You would think the name of the state would be a simple piece of that."

Assemblyman Lynn Hettrick, R-Gardnerville, said the president ought to pronounce Nevada correctly, but Bush's message was more important.

"There are a lot more important things to worry about than that," he said. "The visit itself is far more important. Clearly some people will make hay out of it, and that's OK. That's the way it works."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wonder if he promised them more joobs in the furture.

Um, no. Of all the things to get pissy at the President for, this isn't one of them. Were are the pedant points?

I saw this earlier, and I am aware that there are two ways people pronounce it (Ne-vah-duh/Ne-vad-uh). But this part I didn't really get, unless it is just a lame joke:

To properly pronounce Nevada, the middle syllable should rhyme with gamble. Nevulda?

Anyways, I probably pronouce it wrong some of the time, much like Colorado. I didn't realize that until I worked with a native Coloradoian who told me he HATES when people mispronounce it. (I said it Col-o-rah-doe, he corrected me with Col-o-RAD-o).

That's not even getting into the Missourah thing.

At least people have the name right, even if its misspelled. When you are from Idaho, you get used to people remembering it as Ohio and Iowa.

Worshington, anyway?

An Executive Director here was telling me once that he had just flown back from Worshington with the CEO. Is that an accent or something?

I don't know where worshington comes from. My dad's ex-wife said it, and she's lived in North Idaho her whole life, so I don't think its a regional accent thing. I don't remember if she said "worsh the dishes and laundry," but I don't think she did. I'll have to ask her if I ever run into her again.

Umm... I think the Colorado people are mispronouncing their state name. Considering it comes from spanish, it should be pronounced as you originally said it.

I'd venture to say that Nevada is about the same.

But really, when you get down to it, something like that is simply an accent thing and isn't so much a mispronunciation (like nukular).

And then there's Oregon.

Oh-ree-gone, as most miserably mispronounce it, or Ory-gun, as it is properly pronounced.

Ok, apparently I mispronouce a whole handful of states. Just because a bunch of people there proncounce it one way does not mean it's correct. No matter how many Ohioans say o-hi-ah, the correct form is o-hi-o.

This is just dumb.

I know a woman who gets pissy when south carolinians slur Carolina into "Cah-lina." Of course, she gets pissy about a lot of things.
