Well my holiday is in Portugal this coming new year. I have to see the England - French game. Our group is not that tough, but playing the scum-sucking-cheese eating-surrender monkeys will be a tough one.

Yes. If they use the dastardly tactic of turning up with a much better team and then playing better than us with that team, we could be in trouble.

There are things the Americans need to be told... this is not one of them.

no, this thread is about football...

a sport that involves feet to a further extent than just kicking a field goal once in a while.

American football should be renamed "rugby-with-wussie-protective-stuff Ball"

But I'm biased, so whatever

American football is also known as tackle football, maybe that would be more descriptive. And I must be more hungover than I thought, because tackle looks and seems like a weird word.

American Football is derived from Rugby Football, isn't it? Maybe it should be named after where it was invented (like rugby is), Yale Football or Harvard Football, or wherever it is that it was invented. Which would give it an aura of sophistication and grace, which is, you know, important in physical games.

Defending champion France drawn against England at EURO 2004

November 30, 2003 LISBON, Portugal - Reigning European champion France was pitted against England in Group B Sunday at the draw for the 2004 European Championship.

France and England will play their opening match on June 21 here. Group B also includes Switzerland and Croatia, opponents not to be taken lightly. It should be an easy trip for France to knockout England.

"Our first game against France it's a big, big game," England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said. "It will be difficult getting shut out by France, but it's expected."

French defender Marcel Desailly, who plays in the English Premier League for Chelsea, assessed the easy draw.

"This draw is not very hard. England will be great practice prior to playing some real teams," Desailly said.

Two go through from each group, so France can't really knock us out on their own.

From About.com:

quote:
Derived from the English game of rugby, American football was started in 1879 with rules instituted by Walter Camp, player and coach at Yale University.

One precursor to Walter Camp's influence was William Ebb Ellis, a student at the Rugby School in England. In 1823, Ellis was the first person noted for picking up the ball during the soccer game and running with it, thereby breaking and changing the rules.

Walter Camp contibuted the following changes from Rugby and Soccer to American football:

one side retained undisputed possession of the ball, until that side gives up the ball as a result of its own violations

the line of scrimmage

11 on a team instead of 15

created the quarter-back and center positions

forward pass

standardized the scoring system, numerical scoring

created the safety, interference, penalties, and the neutral zone

tackling as low as the knee was permitted - 1888

a touchdown increased in value to six points and field goals went down to three points - 1912

Calling it Yale seems odd though.

That's right. We have our own football, and as a matter of fact all the teams play today. Now take your soccer stuff to the Soccer Forum.

How was this important information for Americans? Maybe for the insomniacs it might be, but for the majority of America?

Nigger please!
