Art What was the last thing you read?

Dont move this to the book forum I'd prefer someone actually looked at it...

Its just what with things the way they are between uni and well uni all i ever read is technical shit. I cant remember the last time i read a decent fiction. Of course it doesnt help that whenever my father catches me reading anything besides work stuff he just HAS to make a comment. "shouldnt you be reading something about Biology" Anyway what with most of the hard shit this term out of the way im going to make time for something truely epic.

So hit me with a suggestion (it must be something you've actually read) and just remember that good prose should stir the soul.

"The Da Vinci Code". I'm not a fan of thrillers, but this one deserves its best seller status, more or less. Not soul-stirring, exactly, but very inventive, and brimming with real-life conspiracy theories.

I vote we abolish the Book forum and move all the posts from it into SO. I also vote that we pass law making my votes count for something.

Yeah, nobody posts there, so nobody looks there. Every time someone thinks, "Should I post this in the book forum? It's about literature of some sort. Nah, why do that?" another asylum nation angel loses its wings and gets fed to RiZZ's scorpions.

Good job, you jaded bastard. You can explain it all to Bunkie when she comes back to see how we've treated her legacy.

Azrael, I suggest you examine the works of Stephen Baxter, most especially his novel "Evolution". If your Dad complains about you reading it, you will be able in all honesty tell him it is about biology.

Who the hell is bunkie.

Unless RIZZ's scorpians are profering some decent literature they can kiss my jaded MTV hating ass!

Read The Magic Mountain. It's a little over 700 pages long, and it's a bit of a slow read at times. By Thomas Mann. It's one of those books you can get lost in for a few weeks just reading a little every day as you get incrementally deeper and deeper into it. There are some moments late in the book that are really quite startling.

Sincerely,

Hans Castorp

From now on, I suggest we refer to books as "donkeys" and literature as "magellan," that way, G won't figure to move the threads we start in TLF.

My fiction time is taken up by the Wheel of Time Series.

My non-fiction time is taken up by "The Art of War" currently. Extended version with lots on the history of Chinese warfare leading up to when the sections of the book were supposedly written and onwards, using examples, as well as discussion on who Sun Tzu was and a "who's who" of major figures who may have gone by different names. Good stuff.

I like having the sub-forum for books.

My recent non-dissertation related reads:

Simple Plan (I'd seen the movie. Followed the book very closely. Still enjoyable read)
Kiln People by David Brin (Excellent, excellent, excellent. Best fiction I've read in a long time)

Some non-fiction:

Globalization and its Discontents
Fast Food Nation
I've started reading How the Mind Works a few times now but just can't hack it. I want to like Pinker, but I don't. But I hate not finishing books.
I'm also listening to What if? 2.

Cuba Libra by Elmore Leonard was my first audio book and very good too.

Eudora Welty - Losing Battles

This woman never had a formal writing lesson in her life, and her prose is amazing.
