Gah!! And Double-Gah!!!

I almost needed CPR after checking out the prices on the book titles I need for dissertation research -- 'tis looking grim, ladies and laddies.

Check this out, for starters:

Julian of Norwich : A Book of Essays (Garland Medieval Casebooks)
by Sandra J. McEntire (Editor), Denise N. Baker, Nicholas Watson, Susan K. Hagen, Brad Peters, Cynthea Masson, David Tinsley, Alexandra Barratt, Hugh Kempster, Brant Pelphrey, Joyce E. Salisbury (Editor) List Price: $95.00

Christ, Our Mother of Mercy: Divine Mercy and Compassion in the Theology of the Shewings of Julian of Norwich
Margaret Ann Palliser Our Price: £193.00

Some of the books I desire would be at our library, but were stolen or are missing.

I guess I shouldn't complain -- books in the sciences are even worse!

That first book is nothing. The second is definitely a little pricey, I will agree with you there.

You should read something more interesting. I suggest Robert Kiyosaki's books myself.

Yep, I'm being a bastard.

Well, yeah, then my dissertation director, the director of grad studies, and the chair of the department would have a cow.

If you read Kiyosaki's books you could probably find out whether or not that cow can help you financially with a little work or not.

Just a thought, of course

try the british amazon rather than the US one.

NY times had an article a while back... amazonUK is about 40% cheaper than amazonUS.... these figures assumes a US customer and includes shipping.

check it out

Hope that link works. $140 is a fair saving over £193.

halfpricebooks.com is also a good source of cheap books, although they don't have the two titles you listed.

Libraries are a good source of free books, although yours doesn't have the two titles you listed.

Incidentally, does your college order books from other college libraries on shortish loans? If you can get them that way, you can invest some time in photocopying them.

Thanks for the searches, ya'll! After the shock of seeing the prices, my soul despaired, and I stopped searching for better prices. And smug, you would not believe the atrocious status of our library, when it comes to interlibrary loans.

Every time I've tried to do one, they've either lost the form I completed, forgot to send it out, forgot to notify me that it was there, didn't realize it was there when I called them, or what-not.

In a few cases, I gave up after several months of back-and-forth with them, ate mac-and-cheese for a few months, and bought the darned things myself.

Just start selling yourself to the toothless locals for 15 minutes of passion. That way you can make up the cost of the books in 6 or 7 months work.

I didn't even know they had a website.
Their retail stores are my favorite though.
