Martin Johnson retires from international rugby

The England rugby captain Martin Johnson retired from international rugby on Saturday (just after his club team, Leicester, delivered a crucial spanking to Ulster to progress further in the Heineken Cup). He was a great captain (one of the best captains we have had in any sport) and a great player, albeit a sometimes rather brutal one.

Hopefully the press won't be full of too wild panegyrics about him (he isn't dead yet, after all). Some comments on him.

The England rugby team winning the rugby World Cup (in a very entertaining match) was one of the best things I ever saw on TV (through my fingers, a fair amount of the time). At least, unlike funkyrooster, I didn't have to throw up afterwards.

yeah...looks like jono is now gone from international rugby. johnson was one of the men most responsible for england's success in the world cup for sure. in my opinion i would say that the logical choice for the captaincy would be phil vickery. but i right now wouldnt give the captaincy to johnny wilkinson because i dont see why the need to burden him with further responsibility as the flyhalf and kicker, and at the young age of 24. the only other person who they would possibliy give it to would be dallagio. my money would be on vickery for the imminent future, and perhaps in several years down the line, wilkinson i would see being captain.
