Dominican baby born with second head scheduled for risky removal surgery

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - A Dominican infant born with a second head will undergo a risky operation Friday when surgeons try to sever the appendage and prevent hemorrhaging from shared arteries.

Led by a Los Angles-based neurosurgeon who successfully separated Guatemalan twins, a team will spend about 13 hours removing Rebeca Martinez's second head, which has a partially formed brain, ears, eyes and lips.

Eighteen surgeons, nurses and doctors will take several rotations to cut off the undeveloped tissue, clip the veins and arteries and close the skull of the seven-week-old baby using a bone graft from another part of her body.

"We know this is a delicate operation," the baby's father, Franklyn Martinez, 28, told The Associated Press this week. "But we have a positive attitude."

Cure International, a Lemoyne, Pa.,-based charity that gives medical care to disabled children in developing countries, is paying for the surgery and follow-up care.

Yeah. It would be a really tough decision for a mom to make in some respects. Of course I think the fully developed one will die from the pressure the extra head makes on her brain if it isn't removed.

I agree, what I was trying to say was that it is basiccally (obviously) an underdeveloped twin, not a second head. I would just be scared to lose the baby through an operation. Scary. I am glad that I got my tubes tied. I shouldn't have to even think about that situation coming up with me.

I'm kind of a Discovery Health Channel addict.. on Monday they had a baby who's scull had bonded too early, causing her head to be deformed.. so they had to remove and reshape her skull.. it's the most heartbreaking thing seeing someone so small on an operating table.

are you saying that an arm or a leg etc etc is not part of a person?

um, no. that's why it's called an "extra part."

soo having an extra arm, leg or head etc etc would in fact suggest that there was another person involved

no more than say an extra finger.. unless that finger has a functioning system to support itself.. this isn't a matter of two beings sharing some organs.. this is just an extra piece of body.

since we (humans) usualy don't have more then 2 arms, 2 legs and one head

"usually" being the key word there.. which is what makes it often newsworthy.

Why are they using a bone graft from another part of the kid's body? I'm sure I'm not coming up with anything that hasn't already been considered by the 18 surgeons, nursers and barbers who will take part in the procedure, but it would seem to me like when you're looking to rebuild a skull, having a half a skull that nobody's using with the identical DNA would be a dream come true.
