this website was the subject of chat tonight, so i thought i would open a thread on it.

rather than put forth the arguments for why i see it as a social ill at this time, i'd be curious to hear others' thoughts first.

is this website a good or bad reflection on our society? is it a good or bad trend for society? is it something which upon which a judgment should be withheld? etc.

don't give a shit about it. The type of people that would complain about it are the same type of people that write letters to the TV channels complaining that the word "bastard" was said at 11.30pm on a Sunday night.

In the DFW area there are numerous billboards with a white family all smiling and cheery claiming that the Chrisitian radio station 94.1KVIL is "Safe for the whole family!"...when in fact, I think it is a brainwashing, conniving tool hidden beneath sheeps clothing, and on a personal level I disagree with what they stand for, but respect them for the diversity they provide. I'll put aside my personal views and fight against censorship of 94.1, if ever it faced such judgment, which of course it won't. I do not believe certain lifestyles can be viewed as social ills or poor reflections on society unless they are harmful in particular ways, and even that can be challenged. In contrast, I believe the diversity of a society makes it healthier. The way I see it, moral corruption is not harmful to society unless it provokes harm against others. Emotional harm and physical harm of a "trend" should be examined if something should be considered harmful and dangerous to a society or judgment be handed out. Certain lifestyles and trends are blamed for a lot of things, especially the polluting of societies, but this is an unfair assumption. To pass judgment on a lifestyle is based primarily on the fact that it is not your personal preferance in which to live, and therefore the belief that it is not the right lifestyle because it differes from your own belief structramble ramble stop.

One of the weirdest things about US society is the fact that you can't drink alcohol until you are 21 and, in fact, that law is taken relatively seriously by local police in many areas. Madness. I'm not sure that that is the sign of a healthy relationship with the young.

hell, they can't even sell hard liquor in most areas of Texas due to the dry and partially-dry counties... for instance, in order for me to serve you a white russian at work you have to buy a special "club card" that allows you to have hard liquor on the table... as well, you can't buy beer or wine, let alone the harder drinks anywhere (gas stations, grocery stores etc). If you are lucky, they might have beer or wine...and even if you do manage to get that hard liquor on your table, you can't have more than one drink at a time, and the ounzes of booze are limited so you can't get one giant drink... yay for the bible belt

Ah, here last call is at two, but really they stop serving at 1:45 and throw everyone out at two. We can order margaritas as big as your head though (which I would have thought plentiful in TX, being as it is practially in Mexico and, as they say, everything is bigger).

i dont think that the suicidegirls website reflects upon american society much at all. i mean its an internet community i guess where people pay to hook up, and look at pr0n and stuff, and if people want to do that, thats fine by me. that in and of itself is not a reflection upon american society as a whole imho

now, im not too familiar with the website asides from the bagillion spam and popup ads i get for the side and promtly delete/close, but i really dont get the significance of the name suicidegirls? i mean are these people really close to killing themselves, or do they just seek attention (which i find very likley), or is it just a marketing play (even more likley)?

but yeah, so long as people arent slitting their wrists online, i have no problem
