There's actually lots of wild things to eat around here, although nearly all of it is seasonal. There's blackberries; dewberries; pecans; black walnuts; sand plums; persimmons; poke salet; wild grapes; etc.
I'm thinking about giving acorns a try. You've got to prepare them, though. They're high in tannic acid and that has to be leached out. In fact, too much tannic acid could blow your kidneys. Even absent that, the tannic acid renders them unpalatably bitter. Other than that, we have acorns out the wazoo around here.
