Grisham's "The Last Juror"
Just finished this one and rather enjoyed it. It was much better than a Painted House (much much much much much much much much much better), but it doesn't take much to better that lazy attempt at "literature" to distinguish oneself from a "fiction" writer.
Last Juror is also written in 1st person and has a nice easy pace to it. It doesn't go in the directions that one expects and switches between high tension (The Firm) and slow meandering (Painted House) but in a good way. I'm not going to mention anything specific as I don't want to spoil the book, but I liked it better than the last few I've read, perhaps even most of all. It was very believable, perhaps because of the first person narrarative or perhaps because it wasn't so high paced and slightly implausible. You can believe that the story is true.
I don't think that Grisham is the greatest writer, but his stories are fun to devour when I'm relaxing on vacation at home. Next up is DaVinci Code.
