Post Today In History

In 1270 the 8th and last Crusade was launched.

In 1503 Queen Isabella of Spain banned violence against indians in the New World. Unfortunately, no one paid her any attention.

In 1503 the English Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, making King Henry VIII head of the English Church - a role formerly held by the Pope.

In 1739 England declared war on Spain, beginning the War of Jenkin's Ear.

In 1862 Dr. Richard Gatling patented the machine gun.

In 1868 John Menard of Louisiana was elected as the first black in Congress.

In 1888 Jack the Ripper murdered his last victim.

In 1888 John J. Loud patented the Ball-point pen.

In 1894 Daniel Cooper patented the time clock.

In 1900 the first ever U.S. auto show opened in NYC.

In 1905 Russian Tsar Nicholas II granted civil liberties in his "October Manifesto", and accepted the first Duma (Parliament).

In 1914 the Allied offensive at Ypres, Belgium, began.

In 1917 the British Government gave final approval to the Balfour Declaration.

In 1938 Orson Welles paniced the U.S. national citizenry with his "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast.

In 2000 the "Red Button That Really Doesn't Do Anything" really DOES do something. It turns Billgerat's houselights on and off. My SO and I would appreciate it if you all would quit pressing it.

Actually, yeah. My lightbulb burned out the other day, so when my roommate goes to bed, I have to turn out the overhead lights and all I've got's my monitor glow.

In 1941 the USS Reuben James was torpedoed by the Germans, even though the U.S. was not in the war at that time.

In 1944 Anne Frank (of "Diary" fame) was deported fom Auschwitz to Belsen in the last transport between these two concentration camps.

In 1945 the U.S. Government announced the end of shoe rationing.

In 1952 Clarence Birdseye sold his first frozen peas.

In 1954 the U.S. Defense Department announced the elimination of all segregated regiments.

In 1957 the USSR launched Sputnik II, carrying a dog named Laika into space. Laika burned up upon reentry into earth's atmosphere. RIP, Laika.

In 1961 the USSR tested a 58 megaton hydrogen bomb, one of the largest ever tested on earth.

In 1974 Muhammad Ali KOed George Foreman during the 8th round in Kinshasa, Zaire.

In 1990 England and France completed the "Chunnel".

In 2000 Bowmore kissed Paint's ass all night, and all he got was a lousy t-shirt and a brown ring around his lips.
