TO's a douchebag, but it would be tough to justify NOT taking him if the opportunity arose. The Eagles were only 1 cheesesteak sandwich away from ridding themselves of Andy Reid and becoming a team I could support. Now they're going to have to wait for TO to get stabbed outside a nightclub, too, before I can start rooting for them.
The Pats took it on the chin on both lines. Woody was a lousy center, but once they took the ball out of his hands, he turned out to be one hell of an offensive lineman. We're not really one of those teams that relies heavily on an offensive line buying tons of time for the quarterback or opening up huge holes for a dominant running game, so his departure shouldn't hurt us too much there, but we may really miss him on the screen plays. Overall, I don't think he's a huge loss, but it's never fun to watch Pro-Bowlers pack their bags.
On the defensive side, I don't know what you do to try to replace Ted Washington. Admittedly, the Patriots' defense played almost as many downs with 2 or 4 down linemen as they did with their "standard" 3 lineman set, so they certainly aren't locked into a 3-4 defense, but nosetackles of that caliber aren't easy to find. I was really starting to enjoy being a run-stopping team and I don't want to go back to the way things were 2 years ago.
I imagine that Ty Law's days are numbered here. I'd like to see them trade him to some shitty team for a draft pick or two next year, but it seems like just releasing players is this organization's preferred way of dealing with shit like this. I appreciate that approach, because it minimizes the drama, avoids a lot of morale issues with the remaining players and it's a nice little "fuck you" on the way out, but the only thing worse than seeing Pro-Bowlers pack their bags is getting nothing in return for it.
If Ty doesn't want to stick around and play for a team that cut his only buddy right before last season began, now that he's got a pair of rings, that's his business. In my ideal world, he'd renegotiate his contract to try to reduce his cap number and finish out his career here. He and that stupid fuck of an agent (the same one, by the way, that Lawyer Milloy uses) can't seriously think that any team that wants to have any degree of longevity can afford to have a cornerback count as $10mil and $12mil over the next 2 years against an $80mil salary cap.
Whatever. I can understand why money might now be his #1 priority. He's won the championships. He was an absolute fucking stud during the last post-season. He's getting old. (I just looked it up. He's a month younger than me. Ouch.) His stock will never be higher. Time is now against him. If he'd prefer to wallow in obscurity for the rest of his career, making the extra cash, that's not entirely unreasonable, but referring to offers that I consider to be fairly reasonable as "insulting" and "a slap in the face" and then saying "we all gotta eat" as though the deal that was offered would force him to resort to eating catfood to survive is just fucking asinine. Carl Poston, agent extraordinaire, has him doing a little monkey dance, flinging his shit around the cage to try to force a trade. It'll work. He'll get his payday. He probably won't ever get another endorsement deal, since he'd just finally gotten his first local commercial this off-season. And he'll hopefully have a long, financially rewarding career, hating every day that he has to go out there and be the best player on a team that never has a shot of achieving anything worthwhile.
I can't wait to see what Bill does with those draft picks. I think we have 7 picks in the first 4 rounds. We go late in the first round (21 and then 32), so I don't imagine we'll come away with any of the big name running back prospects, but like DI said, that's not really Belichick's style, anyway. But then again, Belichick's style seems to consist mainly of doing whatever's necessary to surprise everyone, so maybe he'll use a couple of those extra picks to trade up for one of the first 5 or 6. Whatever he does, I'm onboard.
