Cool "The 10 scariest things..."

http://salon.com/tech/log/2000/10/3...ween/index.html
"The 10 scariest things that could happen to the digital world."

4) SETI@Home users finally discover and decode signals from outer space, only to discover that the messages they've been intercepting are desperate warnings from concerned aliens who live on a planet that's on a collision course with our own. The geek population panics, refusing to write any more code.

(uh. well. I guess you had to be there. I thought this article was pretty funny. at the time. )

2) The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals shuts down Napster. Napster founder Shawn Fanning falls into a deep depression; then he starts a rock band with Hole lead singer Courtney Love. Their first single -- downloadable for only $4.99 -- is called "Smells Like a Crushed Teen Spirit."

You think that's scary bowmore? You should see her when you hand her a glass of water and tell her to 'get busy'.

the thing that is most depressing about SETI is that our work will never be done. we are just going to have to scan the sky that we have b4 again

*sigh*

This wins in my opinion. *shudders*

Nah, it'll probably be a message that says our planet is going to be demolished to make room for an interstellar highway system.

8) Armed with the new industrial strength laws protecting copyright, Disney starts targeting not just online pirates but also small children who dress up as Mickey Mouse for Halloween. Disney lawyers chase terrified children through the streets, declaring that homemade costumes are a violation of Disney's copyrights

You know, I can easily imagine this one becomming true.

7) Computers, via the internet, link themselves together and pass information between them and eventually develop a higher intelligence than humans. Having access to top-secret nuclear sites, and knowing all the top military codes and soft/hardware, the computers blackmail the human race into being nice to one another.

Thumbs up

It was originally a sci-fi story, then was made into a pretty cool movie years ago. The book sequel was pretty lame. If you ever get a chance, rent the movie at your local video store. The computer hardware in the flick is a bit dated, but the movie still rocks.
