Spain still no more loved than the great satan

Spaniards and Canadians on the same hit list with George W's great satan , so much for the theory that they hate us for our " unfair policies " .

quote:
Jews, Americans Top Targets in 'Qaeda' Document

By Firouz Sedarat

DUBAI (Reuters) - A strategy paper posted on a Web site sympathetic to al Qaeda lists Jews, Americans and Britons as main targets, and calls on militant cells worldwide to "turn the infidels' lands into hell."

The document, describing targets militants should hit, portrays itself as "diplomacy written in blood, decorated with body parts and perfumed with gunpowder."

It was in the latest issue of a guerrilla warfare manual posted on Web sites that covers subjects ranging from ideology to weapons handling.

The document, entitled al-Battar (Sword) Camp, could not be independently authenticated but its tone and content resembled earlier such manuals on Islamic militant sites.

"The lands of the infidels should be turned into hell because they have turned the Muslims' countries into hell... Therefore cells active globally should not set themselves any geographical limits," it said.

It said U.S. and Israeli Jews, followed by French and British Jews were top human targets. Chief targets among Christians were Americans and Britons, followed by Spaniards, Australians, Canadians and Italians.

Professions singled out included businessmen, diplomats, scholars, scientists and military leaders as well as tourists.

It said Jewish and Christian investments in Islamic states, multinational corporations and international economic experts were top economic targets.

Entitled "Targets Inside Cities," the strategy paper was signed by Abdulaziz al-Muqrin, whom Western intelligence agencies consider the leading al Qaeda propagandist and financier in Saudi Arabia.

Islamic militants often denounce the U.S.-led "war on terror" as a campaign aimed against Islam

and Spain despite voting in a socialist government and vowing to pull it's troops out of Iraq are still being bombed , maybe Spain should consider converting to Islam and putting bedsheets on their wives ?

What appeasment are you referring to?

Spain pulling out from Iraq is not appeasment. The PSOE have been saying since the (then) ruling party, PP, supported the Iraq war with Spanish troops that their first action would be to pull them out of Iraq.

Urghh, grammar quandry.

apparently, appeasement covers anything that runs against the grain of whatever political standpoint is held by the "you are either for us or against us" crowd.

reminds me of those that cry "antisemite" at anyone that dares question Israeli policy.

nifty, no?

the point is , that even though Spain is pulling out of Iraq and Canada among others say our policies are the cause of terrorism against us , they are in the same boat we are , the Islamist hate them no less .

BTW , if you have problems with the grammar , tell the Firouz Sedarat from Reuters , if you would pay more attention to content , rather than looking for misplaced fucking commas you wouldn't be so lost .

@Goot boi

I thought they got bombed first... then voted in the new government.
Note that I am not suggesting a causal link.

but still... the "despite" comment you quoted seems to hint at processes that did not occur that way.

Cheers

I was fucking commenting on the fucking comma structure in my own fucking post.

Islam will never hate Spain less. They have a common heritage and reasons for antagonism going back hundreds of years, namely with the moors, who are (essentially), the ones perpetuating the attacks. The article, with its asinine commentry which I quoted above (which I assume is not yours), implies that Spain backed out and they are being attacked anyway, so they are capitulating in the face of terror. Which shows an embarrassing lack of comprehension in the mind of its writer.

There were several factors at play in the switch in government here. PP (under Aznar), lied to the Spanish people by pushing blame to ETA, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. When it came out (via Security Services leaks), that it was almost certainly not ETA, with 90% probability of it being AQ, the Spanish people mobilised, literally overnight against the government (in the space of 4 hours 6-7000 people had congragated outside PP headquarters, baying for blood. This is turn led to a massive voter turnout ~75% with an anti-PP agenda.

Corn knows far more about this, as he was covering it all for the BBC at the time. Hopefully he can fill in all my gaps and assumptions tomorrow.

Yes... but that is not what you talked about initially.

you used the phrase "still being bombed"... which implies that bombs have gone off after 3-11.

They have been planted... sure. But Spain has not been bombed post 3-11.

I think europe will continue being a target, regardless of political stances... at least for the forseeable future.

But I hope that the politicians in Europe will not go down the same road of decreasing civil liberties that the Bush administration and Congress took after 9-11.

The terrorists wont much care either way, I'm sure. But I will not help their cause by surrendering one iota of my civil rights, in pursuit of foolhardy cold-warrior ploys.

On the grand scale of things (disease, traffic and accident deaths) Terrorism has not (yet) claimed that many lives.

We should do anything a lot to prevent terrorist attacks... but this does not include compromizing our civil liberties in any way, shape or form.

Cheers

My point here is, Spain will always be a target, most especially for North African, Islamic fundamentalists. Without doubt, Spains involvement in Iraq facilitated attacks in and against Spain, but to read that as the cause of it and make an a priori judgement that Spain capitulated because of it is to be blind to the facts.

Spain will continue to bear the brunt of terror in Europe. Zapatero's recent, unhelpful rhetoric aside, this will not change. And the Spanish people, many keen to lay the blame of the Atocha bombings on the doorstep of Iraq involvment would never themselves bow to terrorism, which seems to be a prevelant opinion in the US atm. Spain has lived and dealt with terrorism on a day to day basis for the last 40 years, and to imply they are sticking their collective heads in the sand is facile.
