Good movie critics

My vote is for the New Yorker writer Anthony Lane.

What do you mean?

You don't like him? Or do you mean that folks here are inclined to disagree, based on their resentment towards my superior intelligence?

paint chips has a crush on roger ebert.

i watched ebert & roeper for the first time in a year the other day. ebert gave EVERY SINGLE movie a thumbs-up. including never die alone. yeah, he certainly has discriminating taste.

but im sure paint only reads the columns, cause he's too hip for teevee, ain't ye?

yes, but it's about film reviews, which are commonly posted in SO, whereas this it the BOOK FORUM, IDIOT, NOT THE LITERARY FORUM. Or, you could merge the two forums, which would make infinitely more sense, seeing as how hiding it isn't much of a way to generate traffic for it, and it would fit seamlessly into SO anyway.

However, I was principally just takin a jab at plum, cuz I don't care for him. So I was leadin with the chin anyway and deserved what I got. Therefore, I'm an idiot. However, I mod this forum, and you don't. So I guess that my take on it ain't so idiotic, despite the fact that I wouldn't move the thread anyway, and the fact that I've never once done any moderating in this forum to begin with and see no reason to start now. And I wouldn't presume to interfere with yer ideas on it. My job as mod is purely titular, and I'd feel weird jackin with admin shit around here, even in this backwater forum.

so perhaps yer right.

sorry plum. have at it. this is the literary forum, not the book forum. and film criticism belongs here, as does talk about film criticism and anything else that is written.

lord, am I touchy today or what?

Film criticism happens to be literary, as in "Non-sensory Overload", idiot.

Film criticism on its own is not a book, nor about a book. It belongs in SO (and I'm leaving it here.)

Film criticism is words that reflect a film, but they are words which are not the film itself. It is words that are not film; rather they are words and words only, hence- words that are not film.

Anthony Lane is probably the best movie critic alive today.

If you know another movie critic that is as good or better, why not argue that point instead of arguing whether language is analogous to films?

Or maybe you should stop arguing as if you're an admin or have been around here long enough to know.

(But in case you're still missing the point, read the top post in the forum.)

Discussion of critics is literary and so belongs in SO.

This is the final word. Lock this thread.

mod hat

this is the book forum. it's a place to discuss books and other literary endeavors. for the most part when people discuss film critics, they are discussing their opinions and views of the movie, not the column they write. there is a difference. if plum wishes to discourse upon the subject of film critics in the book forum, the conversation shall be kept to the subject of a film critic's column, his writing style, his delivery of his opinion, or his choice of words. any discussion of his actual opinions about film will knock this thread into sensory overload.

I hope each and every one of you dies of a slow, horrible disease.

You can't even see past your vision of "who I am" to talk about movies?

Well fuck you too.
