I saw Al Franken here a few years ago, and a friend was working at the auditorium where he was speaking. A Kansas minister by the name of Fred Phelps decided to bring his tribe to the city to protest Al's presence. Someone said to Al, "Hey, Fred Phelps is here", and Al thought it was just some local Kansas somebody, and waved it off a few times. But when another person explained to him who/why they were there, Al Franken got up and said, "But I'm not gay." The next thing out of his mouth was, "I've gotta meet this guy." He went out, shook hands, talked to him about what he thought, and then went back in and did his speech. I've always liked that about him. And his books make me giggle.


On a side note, when George Carlin performed here last November, that minister was out there, as well, with those damn placards that said "God Hates Fags", "Die Fag Die", etc., and George had a hey-day with the monosyllabism of all of the signs.

What I have read of hers has been stupid, although I can't make myself read it on a regular basis. I don't understand why people can't sell books with sensible argumentation, but apparently they can't. I don't have any great enthusiasm for loud proclamations and portrayals of everything as simple (although PJ O'Rourke's writings have a certain charm), so my enjoyment of that sort of stuff is limited.

O'Rourke isn't in the same category as any of the above. For one thing, O'Rourke is gleefully happy to go after his own party with tongs and a blowtorch when the opportunity arises. His stuff is simplistic only in the respect that he advocates his own opinion, not in the sense that he engages in blanket advocacy on behalf of a particular party. Hell, he endorsed Clinton in 1992.

When one of the major political parties finances a mass-buy of one of his books in order to put it atop the best seller list, THEN you can put him on a list with Coulter, O'Reilly, Franken et al.

And even then, it had better be at the TOP of that list. O'Rourke is funny as hell.

I was talking about the way that O'Rourke simplifies complicated things for entertainment value. But he doesn't seem to really believe that his simplification is the truth, nor really seem to be trying to convince us that it is. And yes, he is pretty funny. I haven't read Al Franken's book, so I can't comment on the stuff that people here are saying about him being funny.

Yeah, that's a reasonable assessment of O'Rourke. About half the time he is pulling your leg:

"Remember that time we tied the minister's son to a post, dipped his pecker in cream, and turned a half-weaned calf loose on him? Well, that's what we should do to the Russians, except with atom bombs."

"The only solution for the middle east is to nuke the sands of the desert into one vast sheet of glass so we can go in and finish the bastards off with Windex."

The other half of the time, he's genuinely espousing his libertarian-conservative beliefs, but giving facetious reasons for them: "When Republicans rape the environment and wreck the national insfrastructure, at least they make a buck off it. Democrats do these things just for fun."

And the THIRD half of the time, he's actually giving cogent reasons for his beliefs (he's particularly good on economics), but by then nobody is taking him seriously.

Franken is, I think, pretty funny, although much more so when he's not engaged in a partisan screed. His SNL commentaries were one of the brighter spots of a very dark period in the history of the show.
