FIA plans F1 revolution
quote:
Max Mosley, president of motorsport's governing body, is planning a major shake-up of Formula One.
FIA president Mosley is proposing to introduce a number of radical changes in 2008 in a desperate bid to make the sport more competitive.
Among the proposals are:
* 2.4 litre V8 engines which must last two races (currently, 3 litre V10 engines to last race weekend)
* A return to manual gearboxes and a ban on traction control and power steering
* No tyre changes during race and one tyre supplier only
* 12 teams on grid (currently 10)
* No spare cars allowed during race weekend
BBC News
Wow! No more power steering and no more spares. If you crash in qualifying tough.

About time I think. Hopefully this will even the odds for the other less successful teams and make it much more interesting and more enjoyable to watch. As it stands F1 is very boring.

They would do better to just kick Ferarri out for a couple years. The first and last rule changes suck. If they keep limiting engines then they'll end up like an open wheel NASCAR (ie CART) and no spares isn't ver nice, what if one of the other less successful team crashes into you? Then your SOL, and could lose points toward the championship. And that sucks.

Ferrari should make it the Ferrari cup and just fill the grid with red, like Honda's doing in MotoGP this year.
willimo, I don't think they're really limiting the engines, except to make them more reliable. In the early 80's Honda had a turbo charged 1.5 liter 4 cylinder that pushed 1000 horsepower.
No spare cars does suck, but if it does go through, the points will definitely be closer!

Aren't turbos against the rules these days? And didn't they used to allow a couple of displacements/configuration options? I know it's a weak argument, but each step they make that makes the cars more uniform is a step in the wrong direction. How long to you think it will take for them to ban the funny front end BMW/Williams is running this year? I say that... but F1 is one of the more liberal racing groups out there, I should be nice to them... but give me GT anyday.

GT is nice because it's the closest thing to production we'll get at that sort of level. I dont' know about the the Williams front end this year. I've been watching 500 and MotoGPs snice 2000 with a 2 year break in there. Hakkenin was winning when I was watching. I watched him lead a race for 20+ laps then lose to Schumacher in the last lap. He pulled into the kitty litter, walked to the tirewall and cried and took off walking.
I believe one of F1's highest intrigues is its ability to an ever changing rule book. It's one of highest level racing's ingrigues. They decide what goes under the Accord's hood 5 years in advance.
