Toughest NHL player(s) past & present?
Just watching a few highlight shows on tape to tide me over until the game tomorrow night, and there was a few classic fights highlighted... It got me thinking back to when I was watching the tough guys as a kid, and this is my top 5 list for the toughest pleyers and fighters that I can recall..
Bob Probert
Ty Domi
Wendel Clark
Tiger Williams
Stu Grimson (1989-90 with the Flames)
Who do you remember as being the toughest? I still say Probert and domi were the top two, period. (Tho Domi is mostly just a cheap asshole who should have been banned from hockey altogether years ago)
*edit*
Oh yeah. and honorable mention goes to Ron Hextall..

People still wear Probert jerseys to Wings games. (Grimson played here as well, for a bit). Joe Kocur (now an assistant coach with the Red Wings) was tough too. Dino Ciccarelli was tough, but not in the same way, he didn't beat the pulp out of people like Probert, but he hung around in front of the net, getting hacked by the goalie, deflecting shots and basically banging around and causing chaos in front of the net to create scoring chances.
People I never saw that have reputations here for their toughness:
Terrible Ted Lindsay:

From a Detroit News article on Red Wings tough guys:
quote: Ted Lindsay was the toughest, strongest, most belligerent fighter pound-for-pound in the NHL. Howe's destruction of roughneck Louie Fontinato in Madison Square Garden remains one of the NHL's classics.
Lindsay, who was 5-foot-7 and perhaps 155 pounds, had an ongoing feud with Dickie Moore, who played for the Canadiens. But then Teddy had a lot of fights with a lot of opponents.
"Well, fighting was part of the game," said Lindsay, still feisty in his middle 70s. "In our time we were playing teams 14 times a season. A lot of time to build up animosities.
"Every game it was a war because it was so personal. If you got into it, it would carry over in the next game and the next game. If you didn't get a guy one night you'd get him the next night, or next week, or next month."
One night at Olympia, Lindsay beat up the Maple Leafs' Jim Thomson. Before he went to the penalty box, Lindsay went over to the Leafs' bench and started swinging with King Clancy, the Toronto coach. After the game ended, with Toronto winning 1-0, a fan yelled at the Wings' Glen Skov.
Lindsay jumped into the stands, strode in his skates over the wooden red seats and had it out with the fan. Terry Sawchuk, meanwhile, tried to climb over the chicken wire barrier to reach the same fan and got his goalie pads impaled.
Also in that article: Bob Probert is the Wings' career leader in penalty minutes with 2,090, in 474 games.
Terry Sawchuk:

Bobby Clarke. The Detroit provincialism nonwithstanding, there was only ever one edition of the Broad Street Bullies.

I may be biased but Cam Neely was one tough motherfucker. He could take a beating in front of the net and had a laser of a wristshot. He wasnt an enforcer but enforcers would be sent out to try and keep him in check. If they really pissed him off he would drop his gloves and have this snarl on his face and 9 times out of 10 beat the fuck out of whoever was fucking with him. He calmed down later in his career and I'm sure it was the Bruins coaches not wanting one of the top scorers in the league to get hurt or be out of the game for 5 minutes+.
Ulf Samuelson deserves a special place in Hell for the cheap shot that ended Cam's career in his prime. I think he lost a whole season but came back the next and the first time he faced Samuelson he didnt touch him for awhile but one cross check and Neely grabbed him and had that snarl.
Samuelson dropped to the ice like a little girl, didnt even attempt to fight back. I pretty sure that Samuelson knew that if he squared off with Neely he was headed to a long stay in the hospital. Pretty sure he retired after that season, his knee couldnt take it.
He is in the special group of beloved Boston sports stars. He gave his all on the ice and now he gives it all for the community. Short list of the beloved that he is included with:
"The Big Three", Bourque, Orr, Yaz, Flutie, Russell, Eruzione, Kraft, Belichick, Brady, Crennel and pretty much any Patriot from the two Superbowl wins. There are more, yes I am a hometown fan.

My timelines are a little off, I was going by memory and Hell, I'm lucky if I remember clearly what I had for lunch yesterday. I think I got the main message out.

DI, I agree with you on Neely. He's well rounded tough.
And so was Eric Lindros, surprisingly enough...
