The Girl in the Picture

I just finished a biography of Kim Phuc by Denise Chong. It was amazing. I don’t usually go for anything written about the Vietnam war, but this story wasn’t exactly about the War. It as about a little girl and her family, any their struggles to survive the war and the oppressive communist regime that took over after we left. It tells of the incident that caused the famous picture, both from Phuc’s perspective, but also from Nick Ut, the photographer. That picture caused her both blessings and problems. The North uses her as a propaganda tool, taking her out of school, but also allowing her to go to Germany for treatment arranged for by a German reporter who had interviewed her after the photo was taken and remembered her years later. I highly recommend this book.
