A cool day
It was a special day for Rob Mackowiak.
Earlier tonight, Mackowiak and the Pittsburgh Pirates played a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs, in Pittsburgh. Going into the final inning of the first game, the Pirates were behind 5-4, due mostly to a pinch-hit home run by Michael Barrett of the Cubs in the 7th. They were facing Joe Borowski, a reliever with a club record 22 consecutive saves dating to last year. The Pirates were able to get a run across the plate tying the score, then loaded the bases. Mackowiak stepped to the plate, and with two outs and a 2-1 count, launched his first career grand slam to deep right field. A walk-off home run, winning the first game 9-5, but there's more.
Game two: The Pirates were trailing 4-2 into the bottom of the 9th. The first batter, Tiek Redman, reached base on a walk. Mackowiak, on the first pitch from reliever LaTroy Hawkins, hits a towering shot over the center field fence, and the Pirates tie it up 4-4. In the bottom of the 10th, Craig Wilson hits the first pitch of the inning into the right field seats, and the Pirates win this one 5-4.
Mackowiak was exhausted after the game, but not so much from coming down off the adrenaline rush. He had been up early that day; about 12 hours earlier, his wife gave birth to their first child, a son, at a Pittsburgh hospital.
