Steven Erikson - Gardens of the Moon just released in the US
Steven Erikson's book Gardens of the Moon got its US release today.
I cannot recommend this book enough. The UK and Canadian have had easy access to this series (5 so far, will be 10 in total) for years, but it has been harder to get in the US. However, now that has all changed and you can get it pretty cheaply and quickly.
I read a lot of fantasy and most of it is shit, but these books are superb. Not only are they the best fantasy books ever written (in my opinion, and it is rather damning with faint praise), they are probably my favourite books of any sort. Erikson is an archeologist and clearly put a lot of thought into the historical aspect of things, in that ancient cultures, etc, are important to the storyline and extremely well thought-out. He also seems like a pretty cool guy; he regularly answers questions at this forum and is also writing an encyclopedia type deal for his world (which will be handy for me, who would like to use it as an rpg world). Unlike Robert Jordan and George RR Martin, he writes his books at a reasonable rate (one a year, pretty much, and they are better than either of those authors' offerings).
Everyone who I have recommended these books who has then bought them has really liked them. Buy today!
The books are broadly set against the backdrop of a large (and young) empire, but there are much larger games afoot (which would constitute a spoiler if I mentioned them here). The way that magic works is pretty cool, the nature of Gods is more or less just as very powerful individuals who have 'ascended' and compete with other, the scope of the books is huge but detailed through following groups of very interesting (and often hilarious, in the later books; the humour is great) characters.
If I could only take 5 books away with me, these would be the five. As each new book comes out and more is revealed, I re-read the previous ones and it isn't boring to do so because they make more sense, with allusions in them become more solid and understandable; I am re-reading 'Gardens of the Moon' for the 4th time (or more) now and enjoying it as much as I did the first time that I read it, for different reasons.
There are also a series of limited edition novellas following two characters from the third book, but they will be released in a larger volume at some stage, so probably best not to bother with them (and they are EXPENSIVE, too).
The books can appear a little complicated, but it is well worth reading through anyhow. Also, note that there is (in my edition, at least) a glossary type deal in the front and back of the book.
So, buy these books. You won't regret it. For verily, they are great (also, a bonus, no fake archaic speech in these. Not a 'forsooth' to be seen).
