Group Claims It Killed Captured Marine
Saturday, July 03, 2004

BAGHDAD, Iraq — An Iraqi militant group claimed on a Web site Saturday that it had beheaded a captive U.S. Marine, in what would be the fourth decapitation of a foreign hostage in the region since May.

The group, called the Ansar al-Sunna Army (search), posted a written statement on an Islamic web site claiming that it had killed Lebanese-born Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun (search).

"We would like to inform you that the Marine of Lebanese descent has been killed, and you will soon see the movie with your own eyes," said the statement, signed in the name of the group's leader, Abu Abdullah al-Hassan bin Mahmoud.

The U.S. military in Baghdad said it was checking into the report of Hassoun's death but had no confirmation for the moment.

It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the group's statement.

On June 27, the Arab television station Al-Jazeera (search) broadcast a videotape showing Hassoun blindfolded, along with a statement from militants threatening to kill him unless the United States releases all Iraqis in "occupation jails."

In that initial statement, the kidnappers identified themselves as "Islamic Response," the security wing of the "National Islamic Resistance - 1920 Revolution

Saturday's claim on Hassoun's death was issued on the same Islamic extremist Web forum where footage was posted last month showing the beheading of U.S. engineer Paul M. Johnson Jr, in Saudi Arabia. The site also often carries claims of attacks by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant said to be operating in Iraq (news - web sites).

Al-Zarqawi's movement claimed responsibility for the beheading of Kim Sun-il, a South Korean who worked for a company delivering supplies to American forces, and Nicholas Berg, an American businessman, whose body was found in Baghdad in May. Johnson's slaying was claimed by al-Qaida-linked militants in Saudi Arabia, and pictures of his severed head were posted on the Internet.

Yea, kill another one!

Because the first 3 got you so much in return. . .

It's nice to see that complete idiocy is not just a sickness of American teens.

It doesn't have to get anything done to have an immense psychological impact (and that's what it's about).

Killing people or stupid american teens?

Why not just kill the teens. If we promise to take out a good 10,000 of them I'll go first.

It isn't stupid. It'w working, I'd say, although the main thrust of all this now is the success of the handover and this is, for the moment, a sideshow. But, for killing just 4 people, they get enormous news coverage, particularly in the US; it is really very efficient.

What is it accomplishing?

I see 3 (and perhaps 4) people being killed by some evil-doers.

It certainly doesn't make me accept their cause. And it certainly doesn't make me want to BLOW THEIR BITCH ASSES UP any less.

So, just what is "working?"

With virtually no effort expended it increases the probability that there will either be a kneejerk response (great for recruitment) or that the American people will become more fed up with having their guys out there (thus making the Iraqi government more vulnerable to violent attacks).

Really, how do you think that it is working against them. It isn't costing them hardly anything to do and I don't see that it just making us more determined to stay there and suck it all up. Thanks in part to Reagan being a pussy when it came to US nationals held by terrorists, there is a perception that the West, and the US in particular, are a bunch of teary-eyed pussies when it comes to their national's lives (and, remember, Hizbollah won in Lebanon, so their strategy was good, too).

Beheading a few contractors and sodliers isn't supposed to win the war on its own, though, it is just a cheap and easy force-multiplier. The best we can do is make it not matter, by keeping steady and basically ignoring it (we should, of course, try to catch the perpetrators, but hysterical panty-wetting and blanket coverage just encourages more beheadings). Just because it is evil doesn't mean that it won't work and I think that, if you leave the moral element aside, it is a good strategy.

You're as dense as a quart of mercury.

I said that it doesn't have to necessarily do anything (as in get a prisoner released) because the ultimate goal is to cause psychological damage.

Any quantity of mercury, given constant temperature and pressure, has the same density. Because it is an intensive property, which does not depend on the quantity of material present, as opposed to an extensive property such as weight or mass, which does. Thus, you meant to say 'you are as dense as mercury' (which, if I recall, has a density of 13.6 kg/m^(3)).

Group Denies Killing U.S. Marine Hostage
By NADIA ABOU EL-MAGD, AP

BAGHDAD, Iraq (July 4) - An Iraqi guerrilla group denied on Sunday that it put out a statement a day earlier claiming to have beheaded kidnapped Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, leaving the fate of the U.S. Marine unclear.

The denial by the Ansar al-Sunna Army group left open the possibility that the 24-year-old American of Lebanese origin was killed by another group or that he was still alive.

A Lebanese Foreign Ministry official in Beirut said Hassoun was believed to be dead and that Lebanese officials in Iraq were trying to track down his body.

Lebanon's chief of mission in Baghdad "is trying to confirm the killing 100 percent, but it seems to be over,'' the Foreign Ministry official told The Associated Press. "We understand that he was slaughtered. God help him.''

Later, however, Lebanese Foreign Minister Jean Obeid said news of the death ``was not official.'' The U.S. military in Baghdad said it had no confirmation of Hassoun's death and repeated Sunday that his status remains "captured.''

Meanwhile, Iraqi troops foiled an attempted car bombing Sunday outside their headquarters in a city northeast of Baghdad after security forces opened fire on a man who threatened to blow up his vehicle, according to local officials.

Iraqi officials in the city of Baqouba said Sunday morning that a man driving a car rigged with explosives tried to attack the National Guard building there. The attacker got out of the car and the Iraqi troops opened fire, killing the man and setting off the explosives in the car, according to police chief Waleed al-Azawi.

Hospital officials reported that two bystanders were killed in the explosion.

Another car bombing targeted a passing U.S. convoy west of Baghdad around 8:30 a.m. causing no injuries, said Maj. Phil Smith of the 1st Cavalry Division.

In Baghdad, an explosion shook the home of an Education Ministry employee, in another attack targeting officials working with the interim government. Even low-level workers have been subjected to attack by insurgents who see the employees as collaborators with U.S. forces.

The violence Sunday was part of ongoing attacks that have plagued Iraq for more than 14 months since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

An Iraqi police official announced Sunday that U.S. and Iraqi forces have detained six members of a militant group suspected of carrying out a string of assassinations in the country's northern region. The men were reportedly members of Ansar al-Islam, a Kurdish group believed linked to al-Qaida, said Col. Sarhat Qader of the Iraqi police.

In Lebanon, Hassoun's brother, Sami, said the family had no confirmation the Marine was killed.

"We have no information at all. All that we are doing now is looking at the Internet and watching television stations. We don't know anything more,'' the brother told AP by telephone from the northern city of Tripoli, where some of Hassoun's relatives live.

Hassoun's relatives in Utah have been in seclusion since the report of his death was issued Saturday. A telephone message left early Sunday morning at the Utah home of Hassoun's brother, Mohammed Hassoun, was not immediately returned.

The report of Hassoun's slaying came in a message posted on several Islamic radical Web site Sunday in the name of the Ansar al-Sunna Army in Qaim, a city on the Iraqi border with Syria. The message promised a video would be released soon showing the killing but none has emerged.

That name was different from the one used in the original claim last week that Hassoun had been kidnapped.

On Sunday, the Ansar al-Sunna Army - a group that has claimed responsibility for past suicide bombings - said on its official Web site that it was not behind Saturday's statement.

"In order to maintain our credibility in all issues we declare that this statement that was attributed to us has no basis of truth,'' it said. "Any statement that is not issued through our site, doesn't represent us,'' it said.

The statement did not say whether Ansar al-Sunna Army is the group that snatched the 24-year-old Hassoun.

The original report of Hassoun's kidnapping came on June 27, when the Arab television station Al-Jazeera broadcast a videotape showing Hassoun blindfolded, along with a statement from militants threatening to kill him unless the United States released all Iraqis in "occupation jails.''

In that initial statement, the kidnappers identified themselves as "Islamic Response,'' the security wing of the "National Islamic Resistance - 1920 Revolution Brigades,'' referring to the uprising against the British after World War I.

Apparently now, they haven't acted yet. Actually I'll be surprized if they don't kill him today, of all days.

A quart of mercury is also heavy. It also gives the impression of "Holy fucking crap is that a lot of mercury."

I know that mercury has the same density. I used it for effect.

Density of mercury should have be in kg/dm^(3), not kg/m^(3).

Militant group: U.S. Marine is safe
Monday, July 5, 2004 Posted: 5:48 PM EDT (2148 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- An Iraqi Islamic military group said it has taken a kidnapped U.S. Marine to a safe place after he promised not to return to his military unit, according to a statement read Monday by the Arabic-language television network Al-Jazeera.

Cpl. Wassef Hassoun, a a 24-year-old Marine translator of Lebanese descent, was reported missing June 20 when he did not report for duty at his base in Iraq. He was last seen June 19.

Hassoun "has been sent to a safe place after he had announced his forgiveness and his det
