I very much suggest Updike, if you like american authors at all. I adore his style, beautifully realistic and very vivid. His writing has actually affected how I see things, I have greater insight into my motivations when I act, and occasionally, into others. And the history nerd in me enjoys the perspective he gives on the decades he wrote about. At least, that's the effect he had on me. That, and his words are pretty. Hurrrrr!
Timequake = Vonnegut. That crazy's last novel, I think. Slaughterhouse 5 may be enough of him for me, though.
