María Full of Grace
I saw María, Eres Llena de Gracia last night. It's about a 17 year old girl who smuggles cocaine in her stomach for money. The first half takes place in a small town in Colombia (filmed in Ecuador due to the war), and the second half in my neighborhood in Queens. It was very good. What was really weird was seeing the movie theater in the movie, and then leaving the movie onto the set of the movie, like walking into the movie. I was kind of dazed for 10 or 15 minutes, walking down the street where it was all shot. It's a realistic view into the immigrant underworld. And anyone who's used cocaine should see how it actually gets to market. Chopsticks and I were the only non-Colombians in the theater, so I guess the English subtitles were useless. "America es ... perfecto. Todo es recto" says a girl who's been to NY before. "Boolchit!" yells some guy in the audience.
