Surf Movies: Dogtown and Z-Boys, Step Into Liquid, etc.

Dogtown and Z-Boys

This isn't really a surfing movie, but it shows how skating was born from surfing. There are a lot of very cool shots and a good history of early hardcore surfers turned skaters. The second movie in the genre that I've ever seen.

Step Into Liquid

This movie is the first surfing movie that I've seen with truly big waves. It was created by the son of the man that filmed Endless Summer and is shot in entirely the same fashion. There are beautiful footage of the most remote places in the world and features one of the biggest waves ever captured on film.

Billabong Odyssey

This is like the last scene of Step Into Liquid for an hour and a half. Huge wave after huge wave. It's a pretty cool movie to watch after Step Into Liquid. Not a lot of build up or history lessons, just big waves.

Riding Giants

I just watched this last night at the Enzian. It's a good movie with a lot of history lessons and a lot of names. Some of the footage is pretty amazing and the climax wave is the most insane thing ever. It's not as big as others, but it's nucking futz just the same.

All of these movies come highly recommended!
