BROWNE DEFEATS BUCHANAN!!!
Well, not really. But it was REAL CLOSE.
POPULAR VOTE:
Buchanan 440,000
Browne 370,000
A lower total than in 1992 for Browne...and we STILL nearly beat a nationally-known media figure with $14 million in federal funds and a bottomless well of free media coverage.
ELECTORAL VOTE:
Buchanan: 284
Browne: 254
Browne beat Buchanan in 17 states with 254 electoral votes. We even beat Buchanan in Florida despite the Palm Beach County fiasco. And yes, Browne's voters in Florida decided the outcome of the election. :-)
In other words: by any objective measure, Browne and Buchanan had exactly the same marginal effect on the election. A world of difference in terms of ideology; NO difference in terms of results.
Now...GIVEN THAT FACT, ask yourself the following questions:
1.) How can pollsters from Dunlap to Zogby to Gallup justify the consistent INCLUSION of Pat Buchanan in their polls and the consistent EXCLUSION of Harry Browne?
2.) How can the national media justify consistent coverage of Pat Buchanan's campaign and his views while simultaneously completely ignoring Browne's?
3.) How can the national media justify REPORTING BUCHANAN'S RESULTS IN STATE AFTER STATE WHILE IGNORING BROWNE'S? In fact, if you were watching CNN or NBC last night, you saw that those networks were reporting JOHN FREAKING HAGELIN'S VOTE TOTALS. JOHN HAGELIN. Who finished ahead of Browne in exactly ONE state. In NO case did they report Browne's.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. It's a trivial matter to most of you. But when you're trying to help a third party get over the top, every bit of recognition is crucial. I think that we have a pretty damn legitimate beef when the polls and media is providing hours and hours of free air time to candidates with the same amount of support, or MUCH LESS, while ignoring our candidate entirely.
There can be no question at all that if the media coverage of Browne and Buchanan had been anywhere near equal, Browne would have beaten Buchanan's ass like a gong.
