Post Whoever wins, they won;t really have much of a mandate

Given the closeness I don;t see how either can command that much power once the result is announced. Both are going to have to seriously compromise their positions to get anything done.

Probably not at first, but Clinton had a smaller percentage of the vote in 92.

Things change.

That might be true of Gore, but not in Bush's case. The House of Representatives remains solidly Republican, and it appears the Senate will also remain on the right.

Despite Gore's 200,000 vote lead in the national total (which is actually about a 1/5 of 1% difference), Bush took 60% of the states. 60% of the state's governors are also Republican.

They will announce the recount results later today, but the final tally won't be complete until they receive the overseas absentee ballots over the next week or so. Those are expected to lean in Bush's favor, and won't amount to more than a couple thousand votes.

I disagree wholeheartedly. The reason I say this is because the minority Democrats, (albeit only something like 20) in both Houses have the added argument of the number of votes cast in the likes of Florida. I am not talking about the popular vote across the board, but the fact that Bush may win Florida by as little as 1200 votes.

Given that the turnout overall was about 50% and each got about 50% then one cannot say that either got a true endorsement of mandate from the public. Its fine and games G, its politcs at its best. Bush will not be able to push through his entire policy reviews because of the problems he will face on the way as a result of the lack of a resounding majority. It is hardly like Reagan hammering of Carter. Whoever wins, like I say will have a difficult time in domestic affairs becasue half of the electorate (25% of the country) don't want him there, and only 25% actually do want him there. I would say 25% is not really suifficient to forcefully push through reform. Politcs is about compromise and negotiations and there will be alot regardless of who wins.

I think you overestimate the memory of the American people. As soon as the media hooplah settles down, people will forget all about it. By this time next year, 35% of the population won't be able to name the current President anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if the President's opponents in Congress throw that back into his face a couple time, but I don't think it will have a lot of impact.

I think the only thing such a close vote means is that we'll see more "Don't Blame Me, I Voted For X" bumper stickers than usual. Fucking Americans.

The Senate is 50-49 atm, with Washington State left to be decided, and the Republican is ahead there. The GOP lost 3 seats here.

The House is 220-211-2, with 2 seats left to be decided. The GOP lost one seat. A far cry from "just wait until the election in 2000" that we heard during the impeachment process. Looks like America wasn't nearly as pissed about that as the press was reporting, since all 435 members of the House were up for re-election.

Settle down there, Mom. That's pretty much the first thing I've posted here that was critical of this country. There is no other country in which I'd like to live. (Believe me, I've given it a fair amount of thought since it became apparent that W had a chance.)

To equate a statement that is critical of the country with a condemnation of the entire thing is ludicrous. The fact of the matter is that Americans, as a whole, are pretty ignorant. The world, as a whole, is also pretty ignorant. I don't think we're a whole lot worse than the global average, but we're certainly not a shining example of concerned and involved citizenry.

And that "Fucking Americans" bit was mostly tongue-in-cheek, since this is Spooky's thread, and we've been involved in some cross-pond mudslinging before.
