Anywhere it lands will be fucked up. It sucks when you don't know for sure and residents have to decide whether to spend their last buck for wood or if their wasting their money.

The first causeway to span the Lake, 24 miles long, was not completed until 1957. The semi-tropical, ever-green climate and geography both isolated and insulated them, and the port, with its world-wide reach, guaranteed a pleasant level of prosperity.

Native Orleanians grew up in separate sections, or faubourgs (French for suburbs). These neighborhoods were, in effect, individual hamlets. Since 90% of the area originally was swamp or water, they were scattered sites, built where "ridges" or natural levees offered elevation above the recurrent floods.

This city, "built where God never intended a city to be built," grew up on patches of separated high ground. Most American cities expanded outward, a continuum, from a central core of solid rock or solid ground. They were able to leap rivers or climb hills and their neighborhoods were contiguous, attached and part of a municipal whole. Where other great cities radiated outward, in effect, exploited, New Orleans gathered itself inward, literally long before they were annexed into the City itself.

phorbie, I'm not much of a drinker, but I went to N'awlins with some friends after college (senior week before graduation) -- I loved it. we did like the romans and woke up, started drinking, lunched, napped, drank some more, roamed, ate fantastic cajun and creole dinner, wandered, listened to jazz, drank, and passed out. next day, repeat. I think I have liver poisoning just from that week. people were incredibly friendly (probably the friendliest place I've ever been). do you know a place (can't quite remember the name) Camelia (pronounced like "Camilla") grill? french fries smothered in gravy.

yeah, youre going to make me cry man. I literally hurt i miss it so much sometimes. much of the attitude is just so fantastic, the culture (s) are rich and beautiful and haunting, everything is so alive and i want to touch it all with my derdy little fingers

i was actually in Camellia Grill just last week. you may remember it as the single curve of a bar-counter with the guys yelling out random names for your food to the fry cooks five feet away.

Nah, they say it's heading on over through Mobile bay, there will be winds but the big thing will be rain. Here's to hoping it doesn't overwhelm the pumping stations.

The real threats Hurricanes pose to New Orleans is their storm surge. Like Logan said, it's a huge freakin' bowl. If the water comes up the river, or up Lake Pontchartrain, then splooosh! New Orleans will be filled with water. Permenantly. Local news items are afeared of a "modern Atlantis" which isn't an exagerration at all.

Fortunately, though, Ivan is staying the course, and the city's sea walls will protect against the 12 ft storm surge that's predicted.

I just got off the freeway here in Houston. There are a lot of Louisiana plates on cars full of families loaded for bear. I heard the drive time from New Orleans to Houston, usaully 5 hours, is taking about 12.

The guy I carpool with has his family over. His mom is from New Orleans and his dad is from the Mississippi coast. I guess his dad's house is, or potentially was, right on the beach.
