What went wrong with religion?
With all the crap going on all over the world I cannot for the life of me figure out how all this went wrong. One would think that the idea behind most religions is to enforce the goodness in all mankind, to devote ones self to the pursuit of a deity that would at some point either during or after life provide a measure of comfort to the believer. Some foster the idea that a good life is rewarded post mortem by everlasting heaven, enforcing the idea that doing good here on earth means payoff time when we drop dead.
I must admit that my spirituality follows no clear defined bounds; I do not follow any organized religion. My main focus is not who or what the “Ultimate Being” is, it’s more of an understanding that it isn’t me. It’s only my opinion, but it would seem the whole thing is just a crutch to get us past the idea that we are finite beings, and yes Goldilocks, we all die. We just need diversions to keep us from realizing anytime, anywhere, it’s over.
Yet for centuries we have killed each other over these ideals. My question is: Is the very structure and idea of organized religion inherently flawed, and ripe for militancy. Or is the evil of humankind twisting and bastardizing something beautiful into a vehicle for violence?
What thinks the rest of you?

It is seriously flawed. People are realizing that they should not believe everything from stories from hundreds or thousands of years ago. Were things so much better back then? Why not realize that time here is finite and make the most of it, using such an idea as inspiration?

Yes.

Yes.
I agree with Vegas, religion should be used for inspiration - not comfort.
If God is anything like in the Bible, He is useless as a moral guide, but does have some neat ideas.

But it does work. There seems to be no reason not to indulge in the pleasures of faith.
"convert or die" is just the political part of religion.

Comfort is not the reason for me, possibility is.
I find atheists as stuck up as any christian.
"When did I realize I was God? Well one day I was praying, and I suddenly realized I was only talking to myself."
My religion allows for paradox and contradiction.

This proves you're NOT god.
Because I DIDN'T spill soda on my pants.
Only God would know that!
