From the Guinness link above:
quote: Most Lethal Smog
Between 3,500 and 4,000 people, mainly the elderly and children, died in just six days from acute bronchitis caused by thick smog which choked London, England, for six days from December 4, 1952. Countless others died in the weeks and months that followed, and a number of deaths were also reportedly caused by people, unable to see their feet, stumbing into the River Thames and drowning.
Smog is a mixture of normal fog and smoke particles, and the Great Smog of London was caused by mankind’s misuse of fossil fuels. Londoners had been burning coal in their homes and industries for years, and the smog had become a way of life.
This worst ever of London Smogs began on 4 December, when a large high-pressure weather system formed over London. This formed what is known as a weather inversion, where a layer of cold air becomes trapped near the ground, allowing the pollution to build up in the calm conditions.
By Sunday 7 December, the visibility in the streets of London was down to just 30 cm (1 ft), and movie houses closed because it was impossible to see the screens through the filth.
The 3,500–4,000 deaths finally forced Londoners to switch to less-polluting natural gas fuels.
