If you could do it all over again...

That special time in my life has arrived. I'm officially a senior in high school, and I'm beginning to fill out college applications.

My question to all of you who applied to colleges:

If you could re-do all your college applications, what would you do differently and what would you do again?

Also, if you feel like typing more:

What is your advice for a innocent little girl like myself on her way to college?

Students punished after stripper pole party
Thursday, September 23, 2004 Posted: 9:01 PM EDT (0101 GMT)

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (AP) -- Three students at Jacksonville University have been punished for installing a stripper pole in an on-campus apartment and taking pictures as fully clothed women performed on it at a party. A female student who won a dance contest also was disciplined.

About a dozen women competed for a $100 Victoria's Secret gift certificate September 11, said James Foster, a 20-year-old who hosted the party. None of the women disrobed.

The men bought the steel pole from The Home Depot, bolted it to the concrete ceiling and attached the bottom to a plywood stage covered in red felt.

"Honestly, we just wanted to say we had a stripper pole," Foster said. "We never actually expected girls to dance on it."

When university officials ordered the men to remove the pole, they complied, but not before building a huge party around it.

Signs reading "Pole Dancers Wanted" were posted around campus and the men bought large quantities of beer. Friends were enlisted friends to check identifications and manage security. They charged $5 for men, and women were let in free.

The party ended shortly after the beer ran out.

John Daigle Jr., a school spokesman, said the party's hosts may have violated the university's alcohol policy and broken rules against indecent behavior and the making of unapproved changes to university property.

Punishments at the university can range from a reprimand to dismissal.

Foster said he was put on residential probation through November 9 and had to write a letter of apology.

Daigle said he later learned the woman who won the dance contest was also disciplined, but would not say what her punishment was. "There was no public nudity involved here," he said.

Residential adviser Amber Davis said the party degraded women.

"There are other ways they can go out and get a girlfriend if that's what they want," she said.

The men have taken down the pole and converted the stage to a pingpong table.

This is the ONE decision I've ever made in my life where I wish I had been less rational.

Don't base your decision on some pseudo-scientific search. Yeah, go to a place which suits you capabilities and interests, but by ALL MEANS go where your gut tells you to go. If the place excites you when you visit, that's a good sign. If it turns you off, rule it out, because those vibes aren't going to change on your arrival.

Generically speaking, CHiPs Jr. just 'bout sed it all. Out of curiousity, however, why are you going? Please don't take that question as an implied suggestion that I think you shouldn't attend. Rather, what I'm interested in knowing is whether you have a plan in mind, or you're attending primarily because it's expected of you. Additionally, will you have to pay your own way?

Initially, I went to college simply because it was always understood that I would go, even though, for quite some time, I had no clue what I wanted to do.

I'm certainly glad I went.

Amen.

Exactly what CHiPsJr. said. Though, I did go with my gut. Yeah, I had nods for UCLA and USC, but I went to a lesser-known school. UCLA and UC Irvine (where I ended up) were offering me the same stuff in terms of financial aid and housing and whatnot. I had been to UCLA many times to visit, but something just clicked for me at UCI. Go with your gut, but don't forget what you're trying to achieve.

Choose a school with a better reputation rather than quality of education if you want to get a good job. Like Harvard.

Most people never work in the field of their degree or their course of study. Don't waste any opportunity to learn things you're passionate about. Chances are if you get a degree in Athletic Training you'll end up working in finance or something dumb like that. The statistics are against you from the beginning. (feel free to make me a liar)
Do not waste money on something you're not passionate about. If it's something you love, learn it while you have the means and initiative. There are probably many jobs where you can apply the knowledge, and be passionate about your work. Don't pick a courseload or career based on what you think is safe and smart.
Follow your heart, and don't regret a missed chance to learn about something you love.

P.S.
Show me some titties college girl.

It may be a good idea to sit in a room with a minimum of external stimuli for a few hours or take a long walk and think about what you really want to do. Some people aren't content to do just what they enjoy or are passionate about. You could be passionate about hockey, then look back on your life later and realize that all you dead was skate about chasing a puck. Part of the rub of life is that time can't rejuvenate itself; the past is locked beyond our control. Meaning that if you picture your future as an arrow and your current self as an archer, you've only got one shot and one arrow. You'd think that since we have just one shot, more people would put more time and effort into aiming before they shoot, but they don't. Modern culture especially discourages aiming; in fact it practically orders you to shoot as soon as possible. But the aiming process requires time to build an identity around core values and beliefs. Many young people get "blown away" by some career or interest which they see as giving them some sort of spiritual fullfillment or ultimate justification for human life, yet this may become somewhat of a hindrance in later years when they learn how much more profound and greater a thing is the world outside that niche. Journalists, for example, up until recently prided themselves on relatively exclusive access to many current events, only to find their information eclipsed by resources like the internet. Does this mean they wasted their lives? To the extent that they chose to build careers on the excitement around being the first to see great events, perhaps they did. There is an antithesis to all this however. People like Hitler and Mussolini were, in my opinion, so terrified of the eternal darkness of their own deaths that they felt no choice but to indulge in ridiculous, juvenile extremes in the "short" time that they were alive. So having said all that my advice would be merely to take time to assess some basic values and for christ sakes aim before you shoot.

By the time you nearly hit 30 no one gives a fuck whether you went to University or not...... University is about getting D's. Drink, Drugs, and Debauchery.

p.s. new graduates are arsehole wanker who think they deserve to be paid more money because they got drunk for three years.

HAHAHA!!!

I worked my way through college. During that time, I thought I was really deprived and missin' out on the good life. I'd get depressed from time to time 'cause I was always broke.

Funny thing . . . looking back, I know now that I was havin' the time of my life 'n' didn't even realize it.

Amen.

Bad guy to ask for college advice here, but as I seem to be perpetually at it, I'll echo what CHiPsJr said; high school juniors and seniors seem to perpetually overthink the college thing, as if their life will succeed or fail purely based on that decision, so they have to make the perfect calculation.

Go to a school that you get good vibes from, that has basically what you want, and that you think you'll enjoy. If there's one school that seems on paper like it would be the perfect decision, but another school that seems "lesser" though which you'd be ACHING to go to, always side wth the latter.

But, bottom line is don't freak yourself out about it too much.

I would agree with PC and Chips Jr mostly as it relates to general advice. I suppose I wrote that blurb mostly for myself; that's how I want to live so it shouldn't and needn't apply to all. There was a great philosopher who said that 'the good life is spent in contemplation of how one ought to live. '

When in doubt refer to my sig.

I just graduated this past May and I definitely have one tidbit nobody brought up: go to a school where you are free to explore anything you want to do for your first two years.

The first university I went to was a fairly strict program with little exploring and I loved doing my non-major courses more than my major ones. I ended up basically having to drop out after two years and take a year off to transfer. I blindly entered a school for the actual education I was getting (by the way, that was a better decision than anyone here is letting on) in hopes I would like what I would do. I loved it, and it worked out for me. I would NEVER recommend going to a school where it's not a loose curriculum for the first two years, it prevents a person from learning a lot about what he or she enjoys in life. Did I still have fun in college? Absolutely. Go have fun, but remember, if you do not apply yourself you will end up forced into something rather than being able to choose your path.

Thanks guys- all really good feedback.

For those that asked, I'm applying to the following schools:

UC Santa Cruz
UC Berkeley
Stanford
Lewis and Clark
Reed
University of Puget Sound
Yale
Grinnell
Columbia

All, or at least MOST dont require a major to be declared until end of sophomore year. I plan on trying a little of everything before deciding.

Oh, and SMYT- Give me about seven days, and I'll be 18! Then it'll be LEGAL for you to look at my tits.

College is good but life experience trumps everything you're going to learn there...so never miss an opportunity to turn theory into practice.

As for your list...

My friend Elliot just finished four years at Reed. It was very rigorous and I'm sure he's better for it, but he's still another liberal arts major with no clue what skills he may have acquired or how to use them.

Grinnel has pretty kickass cross-country, track, and swimming teams.

I know some kids at Columbia, who tell me classes are extremely challenging and stimulating. Also that the bar scene is pretty good.

Stanford...I was accepted into Stanford, but I couldn't afford it. So if you went there expect to meet at least one of me, except with more money.

Out of curiosity, what subjects are you interested in studying?
