Just got back from Lasik.

I had it done this morning at 9 and left at about 9:30 on my own accord with some stylie sun glasses. Not those crappy ones they give you when the dialate your eyes, but good ones that have hinges and look like Oakleys. I guess that's where my money went.

Anyway, my eyeballs burn and my vision is a little blurry and gets worse as objects get closer, but as soon as it was done I could already tell a difference. I keep reaching up to adjust my glasses that are no longer there, which is strange and I'm doing distance reading tests every chance I get. I was able to stand in the kitchen and read the hurricane Jeanne warning ticker tape scrolling across the bottom of the TV. Nice.

The doctor gave me two kinds of drops to use 4 times a day and I have some wetting drops that I have to use for a couple of weeks or months, depending.

The procedure was interesting and completed very quickly. The most traumatic part was when they cut the cornial flap. After the numbing drops they taped my eyelids open, then pried them open further with A Clockwork Orange style metal tong things. Then they put a small plastic ring on my eye, then another with a handle and pressed down hard enough for my sight to go black. The doc asked, "Is it dark now?" Then he turned on the saw. BZZZZZZ! After that they removed the ring things and peeled the hair thin flap back and started zapping away. It sounded like they were electrocuting me. Three or four bursts of zaps later I was done.

I napped when I got home, at the doctors suggestion, and woke up with the ability to read the alarm clock. Sweet Jesus. I can't wait until the blurriness goes away. Probably another day or so. My follow-up is tomorrow morning and we'll see what they say.

Cool. I've been vaguely considering having that done to me--let me know how it comes out.

I had it done a few years ago. Haven't had any problems with it.

As far as night vision goes, that's fine now as well. I only had halos around objects(lights, generally) at night for a few months. Nothing debilitating.

I had it done in 1996 or 97. Been 20/20 ever since. Back then it was 1900 an eye and worth every penny. I do get halos at night sometimes but I think that is more being tired than anything. I had to carry wet drops for about 6 months after the procedure. Wearing glasses for so long made it so that my eyes were not used to the air really hitting them.

Enjoy your vision, wearing glasses has made you earn it.

The waiting list to get this done in the Navy is about a year. I will probably get it done at Bethesda around this time next year...

I'm really excited for you. People who don't have poor vision don't know how amazing it is not to have to wear glasses or contacts, or how cool it is to just wear normal shades for once.

Good on yer!

My experience too. I still have dreams I'm wearing glasses though. The Lasik procedure is probably the closest thing to being abducted by aliens that I have ever experienced, besides eating mushrooms that one time...

I went in with 20/20 vision today for my follow up. I'm in awe of my fisheye vision. Something that's kind of bugging me right now, is my monitor seems to be causing halos. White icons glow and text does as well. The doctor said I would occasionally get clowdy or halos, etc. for a couple of months and that I would just need to use the script for drops they gave me for the next couple of weeks.

They did offer to give me a muscle relaxer for the procedure, but I didn't want it. I'd rather be on point for something as important as my eyeballs. As of last night my vision, day and night, is better than with glasses. Seriously, I'm in awe.

That's fabulous, glad to hear it turned out well. I'm still trying to work the nerve up.

(My dad's buddy was kind enough to give me a cute little book he had just written a few years back: Blind Ambition, so of course all I have heard from the circle of my er, "elders" has been of the frightening risks involved, but every morning and night when I battle with my contacts I get that much closer to making an appointment.)

So, keep us updated.

Yeah, I had been mulling over the idea for at least 5 years. My insurance helps pay for some of it, so I thought this is my chance. I've read a lot of horror stories, but they seem heavily outweighed by the postive responses I've gotten from people who have done it. As bad as it has been for some, there have been an entirely unbalanced amount of people who have had excellent results. It's like getting hit by lightning.

I think I've finally come to the conclusion that it's mostly the case of doctors new to it jumping right in. (Ever received those coupons in the mail for laser surgery discounts? I found them pretty frightening. My guess is it's new doctors trying to drum up new business.) So I think if I doctor shop enough (It's actually a pretty normal practice for me. I'm picky.) I will find one who makes me comfortable enough.

How did you go about it by the way?

I'm planning on it. It's based on Mormonism. Instead of charging them 10% tithing, I'll only take 7.25%. Odds are that some of them would jump ship and start hooking me up.

Insurance. My old insurance didn't pay for it, but the new stuff I have paid 15%. It's not a lot, but I don't have to pay full price either. My insurance suggested 3 places and I checked into them. I went to Lasik Plus and Dr. Groden took care of me. After Googling him I felt pretty confident in his ability. He's also had the surgery himself.

That, and the anal probe that one time.
