I love the IRS... NOT

So about 3 months ago I was out of town for almost 3 weeks on a buisness trip. I get back and find out there was a registered letter that the post office had tried to deliever but of course was returned. The notice said it was from the IRS, well okay I tried calling them and sending them letters trying to find out what is going on. I kept getting the run around, not surprising, and finaly dropped it because I figured they would send another one if they needed something from me or if there was a mistake on my annual returns. Well today is payday and I went to check my balance and my auto-deposit is only about 25% of what it should be. So I figure there was a mistake and contact the HR people for my company. They have the fun of telling me that the IRS has garnished my pay and will continue doing so until the $61,000 that I owe them has been paid back. I'm not sure but I think there was a combination of shitting myself and passing out. They do give me a contact name and number of a person with the IRS that I can speak with.

So I call this person and come to find out that 8 years ago I had sold some stocks and not paid the tax on them which amounted to a little over 5k. She could not explain how I have been doing my taxes since then and have gotten a refund EVERY YEAR and never recieved any notification except for the one registered letter that I unfortunatly missed.

So this day has been a load of joy. I've been contacting a couple of tax attorneys that people have refered and some other organizations to see what can be done about this.

Anyone else ever have an issue with the IRS like this? I just love how they don't leave me enough pay to cover even morgage and car payment not to mention stuff like food.. Do they really like making it so people risk becoming homeless and having a screwed up life?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA maybe you should read a fucking tax law book you idiot.

There is virtually no way to get these cocksuckers off your back and release the garnishment without paying a large sum of money up front or commiting to a horrible monthly payment. A good tax attorney can arrange options for you that could help you.

1. An "Offer in Compromise".....this is where you come up with about 15-30 percent of the total debt in a lump sum of money (10k - 20k) and hope they take it. If you are young and make good money then they could potentialy refuse any offer in compromise because they figure they will get it anyway if you are a good earner.

2. I had a tax attorney get me a payment plan of $100 per month on $50,000 debt with no garnishment. He instructed me to move into the nicest apartment I could afford, and go get a new car, and start buying groceries at gourmet food stores. When we filled out the income gathering sections of the financials for the IRS, I had about $100 left each month after all expenses that they wouyld be entitled to.

You are fucked anyway you go. You could quit the job and get a new one and you are good till tax time or the next phone call.

I think you can usually negotiate some deal with them, but I don't have any evidence other than an impression. Man, what a nightmare. I really hope you can solve this.

I'm sure any Asylumite would be happy to write a letter attesting to your good character and bona fides, if it would help.

Seriously--good luck.

Dont be shocked if they (IRS) start asking if you have any relatives or friends who will lend you the $61,000.00 to pay them off.

Everyone's an idiot until something happens that they need to learn from or decide to learn it just for the heck of it. Neither had I any care for until now. But I'm giving you a humor pernt because that did make me laugh..

Bit the bullet and talked to my mom who got me intouch with her attorney. The garnishment will be lifted within the next 2 weeks and we'll begin work on if we can do an OiC or payment schedule and yes the guy told me about the same thing to make sure that I maximized my spending on certain things from here on out..

What I'd like to know is how an initial tax equally 5k, as you said, suddenly is 61k and non-negotiable.

I suggest you find out the same. Can you say loan shark?

penalties and interest over 8 years add up to pretty big money. I had a friend who was in a similiar situation. He cashed in a whole life insurance policy at age 25 that his grandmother had bought for him as an infant. It was worth about $9000, and the IRS screwed him a few years later too

Actually, I imagine you might be able to take it to court on the premise that they had 8 opportunities to notify you and did not, specifically so that they could pull $61k from your ass.

I say "might" because I really have no clue. Worth a shot?
