The Butterfly Effect
so, i finally saw this movie this evening. thought Kutcher was pretty a-ok considering the movies he usually does.
i enjoyed it.
however, after wiping the tears away from my eyes at the ending - i discovered something that would have been pretty obvious from the start had i looked at the dvd box which had:
"Directors Cut" on the cover.
so, can someone tell me how the theatrical release ended.
also, if anyone has seen the directors cut dvd - what the fuck are those two 'alternate endings' about
(stalker ending / happy sappy ending)
they make no sense at all. how do they even fit into anything....?
cheers,

If it's a DVD though, chances are it gave you at some point a choice of whether to watch the regular version or the director's cut. Just because the box said "Director's Cut" doesn't mean the theatrical release wasn't there.

loads of plot-holes, but so are most movies with a hint of 'time travel'.

Here's the deal: In the US theatrical release, at the end of the movie, Evan went through all that shit to go back in time one more time (the point where he met Kayleigh) and was cruel to her so she and her brother would go live w/ their mother instead of their father. Then, years later they pass each other in the city. What does he do? he decides to turn around and walk up to her to talk. That just completely killed the whole premise of the movie. He was supposed to to stay away from her for the entire length of his life because no matter what he did, somehow it would screw up her life! The US Director's Cut: Makes more sense! He goes back in time to before his birth and kills himself. This way, there is NO way he's going to interfere in Kayleigh's life! He saves his mother because she never starts smoking, and all is well! It just goes to show: Some people should never have been born. Maybe some people were born just to terrorize other's lives w/o even knowing it! Pretty screwed up shit, huh?

I fucking hate it when films do this kind of stupid temporal paradox shit that simply do not stand up to inspection.
If he went back in time to before he was born and killed himself he would not have existed in the present to be able to go back in time to kill himself. The fact that he did exist in the present and was able to go back in time with the intention fo killing himself means that he must have failed to kill himself or changed his mind when he went back in time else he couldn't have had the idea let alone attempted it in the first place.
p.s. did thinking hurt LF?

It actually does hurt a little.
OK. ALOT.
Ouch.
On the 5th time watching the entire movie, when I finally figured out WTF was going on,I thought about the absolute power you can have if you posses this kind of gift.
Any and all regrets would be realized, and if you don't like the results, then just start the fuck over!
This is probably the greatest movie of all time.
They should make a series, but like this force will like hit a different person in each episode.
Like Quantum Leap but the person dosen't know what's going on like the movie, but like he never ever knows.
Only YOU know.
I need an aspirin.

AFAIK, the third alternative was he saw her and just carried on walking.
edit: Actually, are you sure he talked to her?
Which as an ending made more sense to me than him killing himself as a kid.

No, you're right macker, in the US Theatrical release, we never actually see Evan talk to her, but by turning around and following her, it made me think he was going to talk to her. In the DVD, one of the endings was Evan actually talking to Kayleigh...so there you go: My assumptions when I watched the movie were right in a way. Twisted movie!

just watched it... some of the time travel moment were great, like the bits that didn't create time paradoxes and worked... i.e. meeting his father, the knife, etc etc. The other bits were stupid and the ending was even stupider.
